  26. About the Author

“You need to get under someone else to get over him,” Anouk says.

“I don’t think it works that way,” Joey says. “Especially when she doesn’t want to be over him.”

Joey and I seldom agree on things. She likes documentaries. I like reality TV. She buys organic soy yogurt. I eat cereal for dinner. She doesn’t believe in aliens. And, well, I do. But as far as Asher goes, we’re on the same page.

I don’t want to be over him.

I barely got to be under him.

“Okay, fine,” Anouk says. “Let’s just see where the night takes us.”

The night mostly takes me to the women’s room where I help Natasha pull down her skin-tight leather skirt. We talk about her upcoming shoot with a French lingerie brand and she gives me the phone number of her aesthetician that does all her waxing.

Is she trying to tell me something?

Probably.

I missed half of my right ankle when I was shaving this morning.

We stop seven times on the way back to our table because Natasha has to hug and kiss everyone she knows. She introduces me as her pocket-sized publicist, which I am now considering changing my Twitter handle to.

When we finally get back, Joey looks like she’s ready to murder someone. It’s her usual look. I don’t think much of it until I see her typing furiously on her phone.

“What’s wrong?” Natasha asks. “Where’d Paloma go?”

“Levi’s here.”

Natasha, who was a drink away from being one with the floor, is now sober. “I have mace in my bra.”

I can’t decide if that’s convenient or dangerous.

“Well, you better get ready to use it because if he even looks in my direction I’m going to castrate him with a bobby pin.”

I’m well aware of Joey’s opinion of Levi, but I never thought to ask why she and all her friends thought so low of him. This went further than him being a little too charming.

“What did he do?” I ask.

Joey’s eyes snap open, like that was the worst possible question I could ask. I regret it instantly.

“How do you work for the McGowans and not know what Levi does? They make a business out of covering it up.”

“I only work with Asher,” I tell them. “And he’s not Levi’s biggest fan.”

“Yeah, well, his father and brothers don’t share those sentiments.”

Natasha clears her throat. “Just don’t let him buy you a drink.”

“What?”

“Loves an unconscious girl.” Joey downs the rest of her drink and slams the empty glass so hard on the table that it almost breaks. She gets up and walks over to the bar.

“We’d only heard rumors until our friend Alice met him in London,” Anouk says. “If Joey hadn’t found them…”
