Judy Hell, no. What we do is – I mean, the two of us, what we … I’m sorry, I forgot the question.
Radio Interviewer The stories in the –
Judy Oh yes, yes. I sit up with Mickey in the evenings and we read it all and laugh like drains. (She laughs.)
Radio Interviewer Your speaking, of course, of your current ‘beau’ – Mickey Deans.
Judy You know – I’ll tell you what’s the reason I’m distracted. It’s the top you’re wearing. It’s kaleidoscopic.
Radio Interviewer Well, our listeners will have to take your word for that.
Judy Yes they will! Is your sex life as colourful as your sweater?!
He lets out an embarassed laugh, then rapidly changes subject.
Radio Interviewer Let’s talk now about your concert at the Talk of the Town. Six whole weeks.
Judy I think they’re seeing how many shows I can do before I fall over. Are you coming to see me Brian?
Radio Interviewer I am indeed. Although my name is Donald.
Judy Oh! … As in the Duck?
Radio Interviewer I suppose so …
Judy I’m sorry – that was very rude. I’m not quite myself today. Please forgive me. You must come and have dinner with me and my fiancé after the show one night. Okay? We’ll go out, the three of us – Mickey, Donald and – (referring to herself) Goofy!
They both chuckle at this.
Radio Interviewer I would love to.
Judy Good … Love to what?
Radio Interviewer … You invited me to dinner.
Judy Did I really? I’m always doing that. I’ll invite anybody! (Judy realises the interviewer is offended but soldiers on) … One day they’ll all turn up and it’ll be terrible – just terrible. It’s really all – … I’m sorry, this isn’t going very well.
Radio Interviewer No, no, it’s absolutely – … I expect you’re focused on your concert tonight.
Judy I have a concert tonight? Oh yes – I suppose I must have. Though how on earth they expect me to – … Does this place have a liquor cabinet? I mean, my God, how you all survive on tea I will never – (She gives up.)… Can I go now?
Radio Interviewer … Well, of course – You must be a very busy lady.
Judy You can just put on a record, right?
Radio Interviewer Yes, that’s the easy bit. Ladies and gentlemen – Miss Judy Garland!
Music kicks in immediately. Blackout and we move sharply into a concert sequence. The band is revealed again. This is Judy singing at her best, on excellent form –
SONG MEDLEY
‘FOR ME AND MY GAL’
‘YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU.’
‘THE TROLLEY SONG’
At the end of the routine – blackout.
