… You know you made me love you …
She puts the pill in her mouth.
Fade to blackout.
Scene Four
A piece of music plays as a link into the next sequence. A pool of light rises on Judy and a BBC Radio Interviewer who wears a colourful sweater. They are live on the radio.
Radio Interviewer It’s such a pleasure to welcome to the BBC the legendary Judy Garland – and I must say, you look delightful.
Judy Oh, thank you.
Radio Interviewer Judy – may I begin by asking – we’re always reading of your private life in the papers – often very dramatic stories. How much of this should we believe?
Judy Oh, all of it, darling, all of it! (Laughs.) Otherwise, it’s just no fun. If you knew how dull and ordinary my life was in reality, you would all be so bored.
Radio Interviewer You don’t mind all the stories?
Judy Hell, no. What we do is – I mean, the two of us, what we … I’m sorry, I forgot the question.
Radio Interviewer The stories in the –
Judy Oh yes, yes. I sit up with Mickey in the evenings and we read it all and laugh like drains. (She laughs.)
Radio Interviewer Your speaking, of course, of your current ‘beau’ – Mickey Deans.
Judy You know – I’ll tell you what’s the reason I’m distracted. It’s the top you’re wearing. It’s kaleidoscopic.
Radio Interviewer Well, our listeners will have to take your word for that.
Judy Yes they will! Is your sex life as colourful as your sweater?!
He lets out an embarassed laugh, then rapidly changes subject.
Radio Interviewer Let’s talk now about your concert at the Talk of the Town. Six whole weeks.
Judy I think they’re seeing how many shows I can do before I fall over. Are you coming to see me Brian?
Radio Interviewer I am indeed. Although my name is Donald.
Judy Oh! … As in the Duck?
Radio Interviewer I suppose so …
Judy I’m sorry – that was very rude. I’m not quite myself today. Please forgive me. You must come and have dinner with me and my fiancé after the show one night. Okay? We’ll go out, the three of us – Mickey, Donald and – (referring to herself) Goofy!
They both chuckle at this.
Radio Interviewer I would love to.
Judy Good … Love to what?
Radio Interviewer … You invited me to dinner.
Judy Did I really? I’m always doing that. I’ll invite anybody! (Judy realises the interviewer is offended but soldiers on) … One day they’ll all turn up and it’ll be terrible – just terrible. It’s really all – … I’m sorry, this isn’t going very well.
Radio Interviewer No, no, it’s absolutely – … I expect you’re focused on your concert tonight.
