“That’s fine, honey.” Judy looked at his hand. “I’ll just go skiing tomorrow to clear my head, and then we’ll go home tomorrow night.”
This time Albert kissed her lips. “Thank you, dear. I really appreciate that.”
Albert didn’t stay up late reading that night. He went to sleep at ten beside Judy. “Good night, dear,” he said as he turned off the light. “I cherish the life you’ve given me.”
Judy couldn’t sleep and at midnight went out on the porch to meditate. She looked up at a distant mountain as the snow began to fall. She had begun to loathe the side of her that was so full of empty gossip. Judy knew her behavior was all based on some lingering insecurity that was irrelevant now. She wanted to change because she knew the more she chattered, the more isolated she was becoming.
Judy took a number of deep breaths. Tomorrow morning she would get up early and ski in the fresh snow. That would cleanse all the impurities from her heart. And then there was her dinner party with the studio chairman to be happy about. Albert wouldn’t mind if they just stayed two more days.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
·CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR·
Barry
When Barry saw Samantha kissing Judy Tremont hello he knew it was time to cut the bullshit. If he didn’t like a project, he dropped it, and this one was a well-intentioned mistake. He had no time for sentimentality, especially now that he was a sick man. He had pains in his ribs, in his legs, and the fuckin’ cold air in Aspen wasn’t making it any better. He needed a caregiver right now. And this woman wanted too much. She wanted sex, she wanted attention, she wanted to know what the fuck was going on in his life, and she wanted him to really love her. Yes, he had been very attracted to her. But the world had changed since then. Now coffee shops were blowing up, and he was just as fragile as anyone else.
Ever since Barry found out his illness was spreading he had begun working very hard at being philosophical. He knew that he could be off-putting, but what no one realized was that his manner was gruff because his feelings were so deep. Other people like Judy Tremont or even Samantha wasted their lives being cordial and lying half the time. On some level Barry decided they were all immoral because he always told the truth.
