Leif . . . German: Leif Ericsson (fl. A.D. 1000), an Icelandic explorer who was driven off course and by luck became the first known discoverer of a land rich in self-cultivating wheat, timber, and grapes that he called “Vinland,” or “Wineland, the Good,” in North America, possibly some part of Nova Scotia. He carried specimens of wild, grape-bearing vines back to Greenland. Although there is no contemporaneous record of his discovery, it is supported by Adam of Bremen (Germany) in Gesta Hammaburgenis Ecclesiae Pontificum (1595).

COÖS: Coos County in northern New Hampshire.

the Sioux Control: A U.S. agent in charge of the affairs of the Sioux Indian tribe. Here he acts as a spiritualist.

The Wild Colonial Boy: Australian folk song.

GRAFTON: County in central New Hampshire.

Rogers’Rangers: Rangers commanded by Robert Rogers (1731-95) in the Seven Years’ War (1756-63).

E. T. . . . poems: British essayist Edward Thomas (1878-1917) became a close friend of Frost’s and began writing poetry soon after. He joined the army in 1915, and after his death in 1917, Frost succeeded in having a collection of Thomas’s poems published in America.

Vimy Ridge: Captured by Canadian and British troops, April 9-10, 1917, during the Battle of Arras. Thomas was serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery and was killed by a German shell on April 9, several miles south of the ridge.

Truth? A pebble of quartz?: It was a saying of ancient Greek philosophy that truth could be found at the bottom of a well.
