Moss shook his head again. “No, he had a lot more on the agenda than that. He wanted information. Anything I could remember about that day outside the accident site. Names of people in charge, things I’d overheard them say. Everything. And yeah, he knew it would mean breaching my nondisclosure agreement.”
Dryden said, “You mean he wanted to know who gave the orders to drug us. The people who almost killed his daughter. Was he hoping to expose them?”
Moss rubbed a hand over his chin. “Not exactly. I’m sure he would have liked to see those people behind bars, or worse, but what Richard wanted was more basic than just settling a score. He wanted to know what the hell happened that night, in Ashland.”
“He didn’t already know?” Danica asked. There was incredulity in her voice. “He saw it with his own eyes, didn’t he? Wasn’t he there when it happened?”
“He was there,” Moss said. “To hear him tell it, just about every survivor of the accident came away only half understanding it. Like it was all chaos at the time it went down—whatever it was. As for the parts he did know about, I never asked him to tell me. By that point, years after the event, I didn’t want to know any more about it. I wanted to get it behind me, if I could.”
“But Richard wanted to know all of it?” Dryden asked. “Is that what you’re saying? He had part of the picture, and he wanted to fill in the gaps?”
“That’s not quite what I mean,” Moss said. “Richard was after something specific. He wanted to know what you two saw.”
Danica glanced at Dryden, then back at Moss.
“What we saw?” The question in her tone spoke for itself. She watched Moss and waited for him to go on.
“There were three or four hundred people living in Ashland when the accident happened,” Moss said. “But the government didn’t use the memory drugs on any of them. Just the two of you. Whatever happened the night of July twentieth, 1989, all those people were witnesses to it. Whether or not they understood it, they saw it. But you two got drugged because you saw something else that night. Something a lot worse.”
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Dryden could see a thousand questions in Danica’s eyes—probably the same thousand he wanted to ask.
To Moss, he said, “What are you talking about? What would be worse than a mass-casualty event?”
