- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Aristelle snaps her fingers, and the hem of her skirt and the edges of her sleeves catch fire. She begins to twirl, swift and sure, along the edge of the table, blazing like fireworks personified. People around me gasp. Some step away, but others cheer.
Reina moves with softness and grace—a poised ballerina next to Aristelle’s frantic movements. She raises her hands in the air, lifts one foot behind her, then rises onto the tips of her toes and spins like a ballerina in a jewelry box. As she moves, doves burst from beneath her skirts.
The crowd cheers and grows around us as Diantha pulls an endless stream of green lace from her sleeves. Some of Reina’s birds flit around her, grabbing the fabric and lifting it over the heads of the audience.
“No way,” a girl edging in next to me says, and she positions her phone to capture the lace the birds drop on our heads.
It snags in my hair, and I laugh, brushing it away.
The twins take turns throwing a black cloth over each other, shifting not just their dresses but their hairstyles too. One is in braids and a blue jumpsuit and a second later is in an orange sequined gown, hair perfectly pulled up in a bun of curls.
Impossible.
“Isn’t this too much?” I shout above the cheers of the crowd.
Xander just grins, shaking his head.
How anyone could watch them and not suspect the true magic is beyond me, but I guess that’s the point. We want them to believe we’re special—something just beyond their understanding. Their belief feeds us. My blood already drinks up their fascination.
Xander tugs my hand. “Come on. You belong up there too.”
I don’t hesitate. My blood hums with pleasure, and I want more. Xander leads me to the last table in the row, where a family sits with a pizza.
“May we borrow your table?” he asks.
The parents look slightly annoyed, but their kids jump up, eager for a front row seat to whatever we’re going to do. Xander gets up first and reaches down a hand, pulling me up next to him and steadying me as I glance out at the swelling crowd. Already people point at the new additions to the lineup. I reach down into my boots and pull out the three knives I’ve taken to carrying there. Some of the crowd steps back from me, and I give them a feral grin.
