  48. THE BEGINNING

She was twelve or thirteen then, with a healthy hatred of history. Kings, dates, wars—how were they complex? If you parroted them, you got seventy or eighty per cent. But Anna's words must have stuck in her mind. For when the time came to choose her major at college, she knew it had to be history.

Anima has arrived at the red-tiled bungalow that Anna built with such love and care. He had thought hard before settling on a name for it. Plain ‘Home’ without qualifiers was his decision. Not our home, your home or anybody else's home. Just ‘Home’. Separated from possessive pronouns, it yielded shades of meaning that could match your mood of the moment or the light at the time of the day. A picture changes under different light conditions. When a singer holds a note long enough, you begin to hear all the halftones and microtones that are normally hidden in its amplitude. For Anima, the solo ‘Home’ has a web of associations that includes Anna's form and face. A name may not mean much when lexically defined, but amongst other things it reflects the name giver's idea of life.

Anima was born many years before Home was built and Ai used to love doing an exaggerated take-off on how she was named. Back then she did such things.
