“Nothin but some very rough country and a climb so high it makes your head spin. And we’d be the only ones know exactly where he is.”
“As long as that old stallion don’t eat you alive.”
“There is that. I wouldn’t go near him unless I was on a fast horse that could outrun him goin the other direction.”
“If this is such a good idea, why don’t you and Plenty Doors just turn them horses loose and run ’em up in the mountains yourself? You don’t need me. If Plenty Doors can steal a horse right out of my holding corral in broad daylight, he can sure enough steal horses from a bunch of government wranglers that couldn’t find their own peckers with a compass and a pack of bloodhounds.”
“Two men isn’t enough to get all them animals up to where we want to take ’em. We’d need a half dozen anyway. Nobody else would throw in with a couple Indians unless somebody like you comes along.”
“That aint all, is it? Couple of old boys like Ezra and myself, seventy winters behind us. You’ve got somethin else in mind, don’t you?”
“I do. You’ve been moping around here ever since Leo decided to join the navy. Ezra aint been much better with Bobby gone and Ben down in Argentina. Even Jolene can’t cheer him up. The two of you need a thing like this to get your blood flowin again.”
Eli chuckled. It was possible that Spuds had a point. “All right. I’ll think it over.”
Just then Juanita stuck her head out the door to ask if they were going to come in and eat or set on the porch and jaw all day. Just as he sat down at the table, Eli glanced out the window to see the Poland China boar tagging along after Zeke, snout between his boots. He forked a half dozen more slices of bacon onto his plate.

TWO DAYS LATER, ELI RODE OUT ALONE TO SEE for himself the setup where the black was penned, in a holding corral fifteen miles to the northwest of the 8T8. Two Spuds wanted to ride along, but Eli figured he would attract less attention by himself.
