Frank nodded for her to answer. “I was getting coffee. I guess he was getting coffee, too.”

“There are also surveillance cameras at the storage facility. We’ve examined their camera footage from the night your friend’s husband disappeared.”

“She’s my client. Not my friend,” Emily said before she could stop herself.

“Would it surprise you that the surveillance video shows you unlocking the unit on Sunday? Going inside?”

“I told you—” Emily began. Frank shushed her.

“Right,” Stanley said. “Then you left. But hours later, after midnight, you’re back.”

Emily was speechless. Frank scowled and shook his head. “Enough,” he said under his breath. “She’s just here for the car.”

“No problem.” Stanley went over to a red metal lockbox hanging on the wall. He punched in some numbers and opened it, then fished out a key and closed the box. “Here.” He tossed Emily the key, but she missed it and it dropped on the floor. Frank picked it up.

Stanley pressed a button on the wall. With a loud clank, an overhead door rose on the adjacent wall. When it had risen completely, Stanley came over to Emily and stood a foot away. He lowered his voice. “You can leave right now. No one’s stopping you. Or you can come upstairs and look at the surveillance footage. See what you make of it.”

Emily took a step back. “I didn’t go back to the storage unit Sunday night. I went home. I went to sleep. There’s no reason why I’d come back.”

“The surveillance footage says otherwise.”

Frank hooked Emily’s arm and tugged her toward the car.

“What doesn’t your husband want you to see?” Stanley said.

“Don’t react,” Frank said under his breath. “Don’t—”

“Mrs. Harlow,” Stanley said, cutting Frank off. “Why not look at the tape? You don’t have to say a word. Or maybe you’ll be able to help us out by identifying the person.”

Under her breath, she said to Frank, “What harm can it do, just to look?”

“This is not a good idea,” Frank whispered back.

“I need to see what they have. I won’t say anything.”

“Then I’m coming with you.”

“Sorry,” Stanley said. “This offer is just for your wife. She comes alone or it’s off the table.”

“This is extortion,” Frank said, a vein pulsing in his forehead. “See what they’ve done? They try to manipulate the situation so we’re on opposite sides. Don’t go. I’m giving you my best advice.”

Only she wasn’t one of his clients, and it was flat-out impossible that she was the person the CCTV camera had captured. “I need to see what they have.”
