Ilyas slammed his fist into Nir’s right temple, and he sprawled to the floor. A hand grabbed Nir by the hair and lifted his head. It was Kamal. “You think you’ve survived this? You’ve only made it much worse, you Jew pig. Now I’m going to call my Iranian friend, and he’s going to bring the professionals. You’re going to wish you had told me what I wanted to know so I could have just put a bullet in your brain.” He threw Nir’s head back down to the cement.
As his vision turned from gray to black, Nir heard Kamal say, “Get the syringe and the trunk. We’re taking a trip.”

CHAPTER 54
CARL, MOSSAD HEADQUARTERS, TEL AVIV, ISRAEL—06:37 / 6:37 A.M. IDT
We lost the tracker,” Liora shouted as she began frantically typing on her keyboard.
Nicole had seen it disappear on her monitor as well. The thought of what Nir must have had to endure for the tiny capsule to be discovered and removed sickened her.
She called out, “Wait ten minutes, then initiate the ping for the secondary.”
She caught Lahav looking at her from across the room. He mouthed the word Sorry, and she nodded.
One of the biggest questions with Nir’s plan had been how to get Kamal out of Doha. Why wouldn’t he just torture Nir until he got his information, then kill him there? As they’d met around the table, Lahav looked at Nir and said, “I have an idea, but you’re not going to like it.”
“When have we ever liked any of your ideas?” Yossi had said with a wink.
Lahav ignored him. “We’re planning on inserting a tracker under your skin, right?” he said, still looking at Nir. “In fact, I put the order in for it this morning. What do you think the chances are they find it?”
“Eighty percent? Ninety?” answered Nir.
“Try one hundred, unless they’re totally dafuk. Everybody watches Netflix. Everyone knows intelligence services chip their operatives. It’s like the one part of action movies that’s actually true.”
“So you’re saying don’t chip me?”
“No, I’m saying recognize that they’re going to find it and turn it to our advantage.”
“How?”
“By chipping you twice. The first one, we’ll expect them to find and remove. Then the second…” Lahav stopped and took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, achi. I just ran past that removal part. That’s going to totally suck for you.”
“It is what it is.”
