HAMILTON: Okay. Okay. Don’t harm her.
ELENA: Yes?
HAMILTON: You win.
ELENA: Čikaj za podatne vugrade, seg.[28]
DANIJEL (O.S.): Zadstaneš, seg.[29]
ELENA: (to Lamb) They’re holding for the moment. But don’t go thanking him until he’s done the deed, Inspector.
(to Hamilton) Marko.
HAMILTON: Oprasmi, tače.[30]
Hamilton picks up the belt.
ELENA: That warms my heart.
Josef goes to Hamilton and stops a few steps from him.
JOSEF: Pogradem se na tebe, sone. Jimena taleko malo mene vu tebi.[31]
ELENA: That’s very touching but –
JOSEF: Talči. Biću olordar svojih lašjednih menata.[32]
ELENA: No, Butcher. I am the master of your last minutes.
Now be a good father to your son, and teach him to kill you properly.
Josef glares at Elena, then turns to Hamilton.
JOSEF: Znomaš li kako ovo unaraditi?[33]
HAMILTON: (shakes his head) Navorno da ne.[34]
As Josef speaks to Hamilton, Elena uncuffs Lamb from the radiator.
JOSEF: Maračeš otstenuti moje lokarče lokenima.
Onda zabataj ramiš onako svoje najstrače lokarce. Dva tupa ako mačeniš.
Koda povačeš, nemoj vrepastiti. Nemoj vrepastiti.
Zadstaneš?[35]
Hamilton nods.
Elena goes to the desk and takes the mouth gag.
JOSEF: (to Elena) Gotreman som.[36]
ELENA: (throws gag at Lamb) Gag him.
JOSEF: Ne barta mi.[37]
ELENA: Nisom pretala.[38]
Lamb comes over and gags Josef, then retreats to his desk.
Elena looks at Josef. He stands straight, ready.
ELENA: Look at him, Marko.
His poise, his dignity in his last moments.
He’s probably thinking to himself that, all things considered, this is a good way to die.
Elena steps into Josef’s personal space.
ELENA: That he has managed, despite everything, to maintain a shred of honour in his death.
Josef looks out, unmoved by Elena’s words.
Elena whispers into Josef’s ear.
Before Josef can react, Elena pushes him down onto his back.
ELENA: (to Hamilton) Get on with it.
Hamilton painfully kneels on Josef, so his back is to the audience (and we cannot see Josef being strangled). Hamilton grabs both ends of the belt and pins Josef’s arms with his knees.
HAMILTON: Šao mi je …[39]
Hamilton pulls on the belt, with a kind of animal ferocity that takes everyone by surprise.
It will, in fact, take between two and three minutes for Josef to die.
The moment Hamilton begins to strangle his father, the sound of three cellos rises through the air. It’s a dissonant cacophony that fragments over the span of the strangulation into a single cello holding a single note.
Josef’s legs jerk and twitch.
Elena watches, fascinated.
The rain outside intensifies.
As the strangulation continues, a deep rumble is felt: the Furies are rising from the earth.
A dark stain appears around Josef’s crotch.
When the cello’s single note ends, Josef is dead.
Hamilton releases the belt, exhausted, and crumples onto his father.
ELENA: It’s hard work, killing.
Elena turns to Lamb and nods toward Hamilton.
