Elena leans against a desk and watches Hamilton. Lamb sits at his desk, head bowed. Josef, slumped on the floor, mumbles to himself.
Elena goes over to Hamilton, looks into his face. She gently slaps him.
ELENA: Come on, Marko. You’re a big boy now.
She crushes a pack of smelling salts and waves it under his nose.
Hamilton, woozy with pain, comes to.
ELENA: There you are.
Hamilton groans. Lamb fumbles in his pockets and pulls out a pill bottle.
LAMB: Can I?
ELENA: What?
LAMB: Aspirin.
ELENA: In a prescription bottle?
LAMB: … OxyContin. (off Elena’s look) I have arthritis.
ELENA: Uh-uh. No painkillers.
LAMB: But –
ELENA: No.
LAMB: I … Please.
ELENA: No. I want him alert.
LAMB: He just passedout from the pain!
Elena shakes her head. Hamilton groans.
LAMB: I’m begging you. One.
ELENA: (to Hamilton) Would you look at that? A man you hardly know is begging on your behalf. You should feel special.
(to Lamb) One.
Lamb nods. He looks around for water: nothing.
He goes to the wastebasket and pulls out Hamilton’s unfinished coffee.
LAMB: Hey buddy … Can you hear me?
Hamilton looks up at Lamb.
LAMB: Painkillers. They’ll help, okay?
Lamb puts a pill into his palm, then quickly glances at Elena. He puts two more pills in his palm and brings them up to Hamilton’s mouth. Hamilton accepts the pills. Lamb puts the coffee to Hamilton’s lips and helps him drink.
HAMILTON: (grimaces) … Thank you …
Lamb pats Hamilton on the shoulder.
ELENA: Now that we’re back … Have you changed your mind, Butcher?
JOSEF: Šao mi je, Marko, šao mi je –[1]
ELENA: I’m talking to you!
JOSEF: Zmejo! Grazna zmeja vod žine![2]
ELENA: Your son still has his right Achilles. You want to go through this again?
JOSEF: Ti si kurvetina, tvaja makica je bila kurvetina, i njina makica jesto je bila kurvetina –[3]
ELENA: You are a pig-headed old man, aren’t you?
(to Lamb) Prepare the other foot.
LAMB: Please, no …
Hamilton bursts into tears. Everyone looks at him.
Lamb turns away, embarrassed.
ELENA: (to Josef) Ah, such courage, such … fortitude.
Elena goes to the desk and picks up the butcher’s hook –
JOSEF: Okay! Okay! Defta. Raču vim … Raču vim.[4]
ELENA: Vajvotinja?[5]
Josef nods.
ELENA: Good.
Josef looks at Hamilton.
JOSEF: Čilu da mu pakložete glasči.[6]
ELENA: What?
JOSEF: Marko. Ne možu vim rači ako me glida.[7]
ELENA: He wants you blindfolded. He can’t tell you and look you in the eyes at the same time.
Hamilton looks at Josef.
Josef looks away.
ELENA: What the hell. There’s a certain poetry to it. (to Lamb) Blindfold him.
LAMB: With what?
ELENA: I don’t know. Your tie.
Lamb unknots his tie and blindfolds Hamilton.
LAMB: Too tight?
Hamilton shakes his head.
Elena comes up behind Hamilton and puts her hand on his shoulders. He flinches.
