ELENA: Lest you find us unfair, we’ve decided to give your father a trial. We want him to confess to his crimes. Then together, you and I will agree on a suitable punishment.

HAMILTON: You’ve already found him guilty of his ‘crimes.’

ELENA: Of course we have. But you haven’t.

(to Josef) Čilimo da vespamjedate svoe zarčine sonu.[3]

JOSEF: Jači se kurvetino.[4]

ELENA: Such petulance.

HAMILTON: He’s right. Why take part in your charade? You’re going to kill us anyway.

ELENA: Quite the pessimist, aren’t you? Everything depends on how co-operative your father is.

(to Josef) Here’s the deal, Butcher: confess your crimes to your son and submit to our punishment, and he will live.

LAMB: He doesn’t speak English.

ELENA: Oh, but he understands it, Inspector. He’s been a naughty boy, pretending not to all this time.

LAMB: I really don’t think he –

ELENA: Stop being so naive. (to Josef) Now I suppose we can’t have you confess all your crimes, we don’t have that much time. So instead, there is one specific instance we want you to share, one sin that is indicative of … (turns to Hamilton) Well, you’ll see.

There was, at his camp, one particular prisoner known as the Duchess. (to Josef) Vajvotinja. [5]

Josef looks away.

ELENA: Oh, how touching. He remembers her.

Hamilton looks at Elena.

ELENA: She died in the camp. (to Josef) Tell your son what you did to her.

JOSEF: Ne.[6]

LAMB: Sonofabitch understands English.

ELENA: Tell him.

JOSEF: Vinaće murčete i mani i njiga.[7]

ELENA: Your death warrant was signed when we found you, Butcher. That’s true. (points to Hamilton) But his remains … unclear at the moment.

HAMILTON: He won’t give in to your tyranny.

ELENA: (laughs) You hear that, Butcher? A proud man, your son. A principled man.

JOSEF: Dran te bilo, kurvetino![8]

ELENA: I told you not to call me that.

So, one last time. Tell your son what you did to the Vajvotinja.

Josef glares at Elena.

ELENA: All right. (goes to her backpack and pulls out a sophisticated-looking mouth gag; to Josef) Our own special design: a combination bite-stick and sound dampener. Ingenious, no?

HAMILTON: Confessions made under torture tend to be unreliable.

ELENA: Well of course they are. (gives the gag to Lamb) But they are much more reliable when the subject is forced to watch a family member being tortured.

Hamilton lets this sink in –

HAMILTON: (struggles against his restraints) HEL–

Elena grabs Hamilton by the throat and squeezes his windpipe.

ELENA: I thought we talked about shouting, Marko.

Elena releases Hamilton; he coughs, unable to speak.

ELENA: (to Lamb) Gag him.

LAMB: Don’t do this.

ELENA: I’m not asking for advice.

LAMB: It’s not right.

ELENA: Of course it’s not right.

Now gag him before I make your family the unfortunate victims of a home invasion.
