  24. About the Author

“I’m sorry for barging in on your workday like this. But I called your ex-husband yesterday and he said that you have an excellent memory, and that if anyone would remember the pertinent details about that weekend, it would be you.”

Diana smiled faintly. “That’s probably true. I have been blessed—or cursed—with a good memory. And I’ve thought about James a lot over the years. I never saw him after that weekend. I suppose it was just all so awful that it was easier to move apart. Put it behind us, you know? How is he?”

“He’s fine.” I realized that this was a lie as soon as I said it. “Actually, this has all been terribly upsetting for him. A police detective from the Keys showed up at our house a few days ago. He interviewed James yesterday for hours.”

“Why? Do they think he was involved?”

“They’re certainly pursuing it as a possibility, now that they believe she was murdered. He was her boyfriend at the time, and that’s apparently all the motive they need. Which is why I came to see you. I was hoping you might remember something about that weekend that would give the police another avenue to investigate.”

“Like what?”

“Do you remember seeing anyone around who gave you the creeps? Someone who was paying particularly close attention to Hannah?”

“I don’t know, everyone paid attention to Hannah. She was gorgeous. Nico and I had more than one fight about it.”

This piqued my attention. “Nico was interested in her?”

Diana held up a hand. “No, no—don’t get me wrong. I’m not my ex-husband’s biggest fan, but he would never have hurt her. But Nico’s always been a flirt. And he certainly liked flirting with Hannah. It annoyed me to no end, to be honest.”

“Was Hannah a flirt, too?”

“No, I wouldn’t say so. She did like getting attention. But then, don’t most people?”

“What was she like? I’ve always wondered.”

“What do you mean?”

“Was she nice? Funny? Smart? James has never really told me much about her, and I’ve always been curious.”

Diana considered this. “Yes, she was nice, or at least, she was always nice to me. She was fun to spend time with. She liked to laugh. But the thing I remember most about her was that she had this innate magnetism. People were naturally drawn to her. I’ve never met anyone quite like her, before or since. To be honest, I was always jealous of her for that.”

I nodded. “I can relate. I’ve always been a little jealous of her, too. And I never even met her.”

“Well, that’s understandable. I can’t imagine it’s easy to know that your husband was engaged to another woman, especially when Hannah disappeared so soon after. That would get under anyone’s skin.”
