STOLEN ENGLISH Andrea and Evan’s Story :

EXCERPT STOLEN ENGLISH
“Andrea,” Evan said calmly as he approached, his eyes fully trained on mine. I had the feeling he wanted to grab me himself and was physically holding himself back. “I was looking for you. You asked me to come get you when I was ready to leave.” The lie tripped so easily from his lips, the tone deceptively casual.
“She was taking a walk with me.” Christian tugged almost imperceptibly, but it could have been with a thousand times more force for the reaction it caused in me. My heart pounded heavily in my ears.
“No,” I said and cleared my throat, pulling my arm free and forcing a smile. I had always been so good at pretending everything was okay, and the instinct came back flawlessly. “No, thank you. I had a lovely evening, but I’m ready to leave now.” Christian had spooked me and Evan had somehow seen it from across the party.
“Mais, ma cherie, allow me to accompany you.”
“I’ve got it,” Evan said. He clapped Christian on the shoulder, jovially, not allowing him to argue and subtly keeping him in place as I slipped out of his reach. “Great to see you, Christian. Let’s plan to go to a race soon.”
“Bye, Christian,” I said. “Oh, let me quickly run and say bye to Meg.” I walked back to the main grouping of people. Seconds later, Evan was beside me. Wordlessly, and without saying goodbye to anyone, not even Meg, we both walked straight through the restaurant and up the concrete stairs to the beach walk along the strip. The street lights and the lights from the hotels and passing cars brought reality roaring back, and I took a deep inhale, letting the air whistle around my tight ribs. I didn’t want to talk about what had happened, and I didn’t want Evan to ask me either.
He was quiet and solid by my side as I breathed in deep lungfuls of air. He wordlessly hailed a taxi and gave him the quay number. The taxi driver looked put out to only be driving us a short distance, but Evan shoved twenty euros at him and the man nodded. Evan opened the door for me, and I climbed in and slid across the seat. Then Evan was in beside me and the door closed and we set off.
“You don’t have come back with me.” I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye and noticed the twitch in his jaw, even while the rest of his form seemed outwardly calm. “Thank you,” I whispered when he didn’t answer.
