She unwrapped some artisan cheese from Keswick market to go with the grapes and chutney set out on a small chopping board. She’d sliced a fresh rye loaf and set it between them with two plates. Goose bumps covered her legs and she wrapped the towel tighter. They sipped wine in between mouthfuls of food and watched as the last of the sun sank lower over the hills to the west. Cat Bells was framed in the darkening sky, and Kelly closed her eyes.

She’d set her out-of-office that afternoon and said farewell to her team for the coming three weeks.

And before that, she’d got a technician to alter her security settings.

About the Author

Rachel Lynch grew up in Cumbria and the lakes and fells are never far away from her. London pulled her away to teach History and marry an Army Officer, whom she followed around the globe for thirteen years. A change of career after children led to personal training and sports therapy, but writing was always the overwhelming force driving the future. The human capacity for compassion as well as its descent into the brutal and murky world of crime are fundamental to her work.
