‘Barely. He’s got some pretty horrible injuries but he’s breathing.’
‘Is he able to tell you his name?’
‘It’s Jock. That’s all we got out of him. We’ve got an ambulance on the way.’
Kelly looked at her phone and brought up the email of the pentacle. She entered the last two locations: Woden’s Face and Threlkeld Quarry. They fit perfectly and she shook her head, annoyed with herself for not pinpointing them. But it was an impossible task and no one could have done it. There was only one point missing: the top of the pentagram. And that was somewhere on Lonscale Fell.
She left the farmhouse and went out into the fresh air. More vehicles arrived and a CSI team greeted her. They’d process the whole lot and, judging by the amount of crap inside, it’d take them days. She asked for a pair of shoe covers and gloves and went back inside. The house was simply laid out, or the rooms that were in use. As she wandered around, taking in the scene, she noticed three pairs of wellington boots slung beside a door. She turned them upside down and one of them was a size eight.
Someone shouted from outside. A Fiat campervan had been discovered inside one of the garages, as well as Carry Tomlin’s silver Ford Mondeo. Whoever did this was messy, and she was confident that if Carry was killed in here before being dumped at Thirlmere, there’d be DNA evidence. They would also examine the jaws and bite shapes of the three dogs before they were destroyed, though Kelly was pretty confident that they’d match Carry Tomlin’s wounds. She walked through the room where the bodies were being photographed, and came out into a hall. The ARV team confirmed that no other persons were inside the house, so she knew she was safe. She found a bathroom and recoiled at the conditions. Had Kirk Junker really made his family live here? Was Daphne safe or was finding her now even more unlikely?
The bath was relatively clean, though there were some cleaning products. Maybe this was where Carry was bathed and drowned. A lab could test the molecular structure of the products present and compare them to what Ted had collected from Carry’s lungs. She left the room and tried another. It was fairly tidy and even homely. A couch looked inviting and a table was laid with candles and trinkets. It wasn’t until she went closer that she recognised the layout and knew that she was staring at an altar.
