‘I can’t get it out of my head. I just keep seeing his face as he fell. He looked at me and I watched him just crash into the floor,’ Josie spoke manically, but that was a good sign; it was the quiet ones who didn’t let it out who were more of a worry.

‘Callum? How are you doing?’ Kelly asked.

‘I feel sick,’ he said. Joe went to his son and sat next to him, after putting a cup of tea on a table next to Kelly.

‘No one should have to witness that, son, there’s no shame in not knowing how to deal with the vision of it,’ Joe said.

‘Your dad’s right. You wanting to be sick is normal. No one should have to see that.’

‘He was such a nice man,’ Josie started crying again. ‘He was so…’ she couldn’t find the words.

‘Josie, I need to speak to your dad. Mr Spencer—’

‘Joe, please,’

‘Joe. Could Josie stay here for a little while? Is that all right with you, Josie? Where would you rather be?’

‘I’d like to stay, if that’s OK?’ she said. She looked tiny and innocent, sat on the couch, with her swollen red eyes and massive jumper that had clearly been given to her by Callum.

‘Of course she can stay, I’ll stay here,’ Joe said.

‘Thank you. I’ll let you know when we’re on our way back.’

Johnny went to his daughter and hugged her. ‘We won’t be long. I need to tell Kelly all about it so it can be investigated properly.’

‘Did the rope snap? I don’t think I want to do it any more,’ Josie said.

Kelly looked at Johnny, who replied. ‘We’re not sure,’ he said. ‘There might have been a misunderstanding with the bindings at the top of the climb, we just don’t know, but modern ropes don’t just snap, Josie, it’s a safe sport, but I understand if you don’t want to think about it right now. I don’t want to leave you,’ he added.

‘It’s all right, Dad. His family deserve to know what happened.’

‘I’ll look after her, Mr Frietze,’ Callum said.

‘Call me Johnny.’

They left and got into Kelly’s car.

‘I’m taking you back to Borrowdale. I have a CSI team on the way, look at this.’ She handed Johnny her phone, with the email from Rob sent minutes ago. Rob and Kate were on site and he’d attached photos of the rope. Kelly had checked in advance: there were none of the body. Johnny had a strong stomach but Kev was a pal.

‘You are fucking kidding me. Why would Kev be a target?’

‘Rage/no rage.’

‘What?’
