‘I think you might do, Fred. Jock told us about a hotel that Kirk Junker took Edna Beverley to. It was a long time ago. It was around the time her son went missing.’
‘I already told you that was before we met.’
‘But, given the villainous reputation of Kirk Junker, are you telling me that no one ever talked about him? Or Edna? Or Mary’s relationship with him? I find that difficult to believe.’
Fred shuffled in his seat.
‘You see, my problem with you is that you’re only giving me what you think you can get away with. You’re holding back, Fred. Even though your beloved friend was butchered in her own home, and her animals tortured and burned to death, you still won’t offer me something.’
Fred squirmed at the mention of the nature of Mary’s suffering.
‘Recognise this?’
Fred recoiled. ‘Is that…?’
‘What’s the symbol, Fred?’
‘The Moon Goddess, I told you before.’
‘Not usually drawn in blood though? And this?’ The first picture she’d shown him was the one Ted had spotted next to Mary’s body, with the corpse blanked out. The second was the crude tattoo gouged into Carry’s neck. Fred looked at it in panic.
‘On the journalist. I don’t think he used sterile equipment, what do you think?’
She felt sorry for the man in front of her, but he needed to start talking and stop prevaricating. No one liked coppers anyway, she wasn’t here to be friends.
‘Why the Moon Goddess? Is it because it’s nearly Mabon? What’s so important about her?’
‘She’s the light!’ Fred shouted, and Kelly noticed the veins throbbing in his neck. Fred looked at DS Phillips frantically, as if asking for help. Will didn’t change his expression.
‘Fred!’ Kelly shouted back at him. ‘The light begins to die at Mabon, doesn’t it? Who do you think is supposed to die? His daughter? Is she going to die? She’s beautiful, isn’t she? Your friend Joe Spencer saw it. I saw it with my own eyes for Christ’s sake. She was like a goddess! He raised a goddess to kill her when the time was right? Is that it?’
Fred looked feverishly between the two officers.
‘Fred, I’m not interested in your lifestyle. My only concern is finding the killers of Mary and Carry, and making sure he doesn’t do it again. Mabon is next week. There are four elements, or five if you count spirit. He’s not even halfway done!’ She banged her hand on the table.
