“Adela, I only tried pear syrup once. I told you I didn’t have another can of peaches.”
Her eyebrows curled. “Did I tell you that pear syrup was an acceptable substitution? No. Then you shouldn’t have tried it. So what does ‘All right’ mean? Didn’t you like him?”
“Didn’t he like you?” Eva asked, slim and elegant in her gray suit. “Did he realize it was you leaving the invitation?”
You know, Eva dressed far too fashionably for me to like her. Cold chic, that’s what she had. I’d never seen her wear a feather. And now that I thought about it, the delicate structure of her face gave her a rather sharp look.
“Yes,” I snapped my teeth together. “He realized it was me.”
“Of course, he would have been too polite to say otherwise,” Eva mentioned. She smoothed back her hair—redundantly, because not a single brown strand of it ever strayed from her perfect coiffure. My hair frizzed all over the place. “Did he want to go out again?”
“Yes.” I glared at her.
Eva shut her mouth in surprise and looked deeply disappointed.
“Really?” Adela looked unflatteringly surprised, too. Had every woman there that night been indulging in the fantasy that Sébastien assumed the invitation was from her? “So why did you say it was ‘All right’ and not fantastic? Was he boring? Was he annoying?”
“No, he seemed—great. But you know it’s never going to work out. I never manage to date anyone longer than a few weeks, and anyway, I leave here mid-June. Remember?”
Eva brightened.
“You don’t have to leave here mid-June,” Adela said. Eva frowned at her. “I don’t leave until the end of June. You could stay through then.”
“If it becomes an issue,” Eva said. “Which it probably won’t. You know what? You should invite him to come out with all of us sometime so I can get to know him better.”
I had very annoying friends. I glared at Eva.
“Well, never let a cute guy go to waste,” she muttered, surprised at my attitude. “I’d wait until you were gone.”
“He might just have a hard time getting over me!” I snapped, scowling. “And not want to be passed from one woman to another.”
“After a month?” Adela asked.
“My, aren’t we getting cocky after having one little invitation accepted,” Eva said.
