EXCERPT – BEYOND THE TRUTH
Aaliya
Prologue
Regret!
It crashes through my mind, intensifying my grief. My entire life flashes in front of my eyes and the only thing hammering inside me is regret. Like a storm, it lashes inside me and makes me wish I’d done better.
I blink rapidly, clearing the tears clogging my eyes and concentrate on Damien. Blood soaks his white shirt, spreading like tentacles in all directions.
It’s so hard to speak right now.
“Damien!” I whisper.
His lips move, but it’s difficult to hear what he is saying against the ringing in my head. I stare at him in utter dismay.
Why did this have to happen now?
Why?
I wish I had made better choices in life.
I wish I had been a better wife to Damien.
I wish I hadn’t lied to him.
I wish I had been honest from the start.
Maybe then the distance between us wouldn’t have existed. Perhaps I wouldn’t regret so many of the last few weeks, wasted because of the multitude of misunderstandings. And just when we had started to sort everything, we were facing the end.
Time! If only I had more time to enjoy the present and the future.
So, in the end, what I regret the most is not having more time!
More time for us to be a family.
More time to live this life I wanted to live.
But now I can’t.
“Damien,” I whisper, unable to control the tears leaking down my eyes.
It’s all over!
This is the end.
Aaliya
Two months earlier
“Rian!”
Damien calls out our son’s name and drops down on the floor. He clutches Rian in his arms and peppers his little face with kisses, making Rian squeal in delight. My darling boy gurgles in laughter, his happy voice floating around us all.
He remembers!
Damien remembers!
Tears stream down my face. Thank God! All my prayers have been answered. No more lies. Now we can be a family again. I watch my husband and son together, my heart bursting with joy. Gabe and Jonathan, both flank my sides and we all trade a silent but grateful look with each other.
Damien carries Rian in his arms and stands up.
“I’m taking him!” He announces, his eyes on me.
I take a step forward, my face scrunched. “What? Why?”
