Mel nodded. “It’s a date. I’ll see you on the beach at seven.” She left the store and Joanna watched her go and thought what a luxury it was to be part of something, to belong, to be surrounded by people who cared.

She went into the storeroom to sort through the books that had arrived.

She’d only managed to open one box when she heard the sound of the bell.

Her heart rate increased and she stood up and smoothed her hair.

Nate?

She stepped back into the store and stopped dead. “Nessa?”

“Hi, boss.” Nessa grinned. “Why is it that when I’m not around to help you always get yourself into a mess?”

“What are you doing here?”

“I’m still officially your assistant.” Nessa swung her backpack off her shoulder. “I thought you might be able to use some help now those photographers are starting to swarm again, but it seems you have everything under control. You look great, by the way.”

“Thank you. It’s good to see you.” Joanna gave Nessa a big hug. “I’m so grateful for all you did. The car. Handling the media. All of it. The car!” She stepped back with a flash of guilt. “I need to return the car. How could I have forgotten?”

“Judging from the latest set of photos, you had other things on your mind.” Nessa winked at her. “No hurry. Dan doesn’t need the car.”

“Do you have some time off? Can you spend a few days here?”

“I can spend as long as I like. I’m no longer working for the company, either.”

“What? That can’t be right. Your job was secure. I made sure of it.” She felt a flash of anger. “I’ll make a call right now.”

“Don’t. They didn’t want me to leave. It was my choice.”

“You chose to leave?”

“Yes. I worked for you. If you don’t need an assistant, I’ll figure something else out.”

Joanna thought about everything Nessa had done. How she’d been a friend to her when everyone else had turned away. “I need an assistant. We can figure out the details later. Do you have somewhere to stay? I have room at Otter’s Nest.”

Nessa tilted her head. “Do you have a pool?”

“A pool and a beach.”

“In that case say hello to your newest houseguest. I don’t expect you to cook for me, obviously—”

“I can cook for you. Ashley has been teaching me.”

“Ashley—?” Nessa turned as the door opened and Ashley walked in, tugging Jon with her.

“Joanna! Are you okay? You were amazing back there.”

“I’m fine. And this must be Jon.” Joanna held out her hand and then dispensed with formality and hugged him. “We’re so very pleased you’re here.”

“Thanks.” Jon’s face turned pink. “And thanks for everything you’ve done for Ashley.”
