“It looks good from where I’m standing.” He kissed her and then finally lifted his head. “If we’re going to do some exploring, we’d better find somewhere more private.”

“Otter’s Nest?”

“My place is closer.”

They all but ran there, laughing when she dropped her shoes, stumbling through the side entrance of the Surf Café and up the wooden steps that led to his apartment.

It was breezy and light, the furnishings all white and ocean blue.

They washed the sand off their feet in the bathroom and then kissed their way to his bedroom, with its large bed overlooking the sea.

She awoke later feeling the chill of sea air on her skin.

Nate was sleeping deeply, one arm flung over her naked body.

She snuggled closer and tugged the covers over them, smiling and content as she relived the evening before.

She dozed again, and next time she woke the light was trickling through the windows. She picked up her phone to check the time, and saw that Nessa had returned her call from the day before.

The only thing she would miss about her old life was Nessa.

She slid out of bed and walked to the window. Today a low sea mist clung to the shore, blurring detail.

She gazed at the view for a moment and was about to go back to bed when a couple of people caught her eye. It wasn’t unusual to see people on the beach this early, but these two didn’t seem interested in the beach. They were interested in the Surf Café.

She spotted the camera and stepped out of sight, heart racing.

Tourists? She so badly wanted it to be tourists, but there was no reason for a tourist to be interested in the Surf Café when it was closed.

It was all too familiar.

She scooped up her phone and walked quietly out of the bedroom into the living room.

It could be coincidence.

It didn’t take her long to find out that it wasn’t. The story was right there, along with a photograph of her and Nate kissing on the beach the evening before. The way he was holding her meant that her white dress was rucked up around her thighs. She was standing slightly on her toes, her arms locked around his neck. Her hair tumbled down her back. She was pressed so close to him that there wasn’t a chink of light to be seen. Is that how they’d looked? She’d experienced that kiss from the inside, and now she was seeing it from the outside.
