  40. About the Author

It took five days before he was feeling well enough to leave the room, and then only for short walks. Natalia went with him, holding onto his arm to offer him some support. They were given quite a few stares as they walked through the city, he the rough-looking fellow with the scruffy beard, and she in her elegant dress. It was actually Athgar's idea for her to buy a more fitting garment, and so on their third day out together they managed to find a dressmaker, this time someone far more used to making commoners clothes.

The woman who ran the place was most polite. Natalia's blatant display of wealth was enticing as a client, and so they soon became the focus of her attention, despite other women in the shop.

"Might I ask what style you were looking for, my lady?" the woman preened.

"Something for travelling," offered Athgar, looking about. "She has elegant clothing, for special occasions, but needs something for walking about."

"Have you a preference for cloth?" asked the proprietor.

"Something that wears well," interjected Athgar again.

"I always wear dresses well," said Natalia, looking a little miffed.

"No, I mean something that is rugged."

"Oh, yes, I see what you mean. He's right," Natalia admitted, "I'll need something rugged."

The woman looked to Athgar, "Does she have a preference for colour?" she asked.

"Blue," said Natalia, causing the attendant to turn in her direction once again. "What do you think, Athgar?"

The Therengian was staring at bolts of cloth that were sitting on a table. He lifted one, examining its colour. "This cloth here," he asked, "this dark grey one, has anyone ordered any of this in quantity in the last few years?"

"Saints, no," the storekeeper replied, "we only get that in for the Temple Knights, even though they're rare, they do pay well."

"What's a Temple Knight?" he asked.

"That's the Order of Saint Cunar," offered Natalia, "they're one of the six saintly orders, I thought you would have known that."

"Sorry, no. My people worship the old Gods."

The look of revulsion on the proprietor's face was noticeable.

"Something wrong?" asked Natalia.

"Sorry, my lady, I didn't know he was a heathen."

"Correct me if I'm wrong," offered Natalia, "but isn't the Church founded on the principle of getting along with others?"

"I suppose, my lady, among other things."

"Then I think you should be more charitable towards others, don't you agree?"

"Of course, my lady," the woman said, eager for the sale. She continued taking Natalia's measurements as Athgar studied the material.

"It's a rather strange colour," he observed, "I don't think I've seen anyone in town wearing it."

"It's only the Temple Knights of Cunar that wear it," offered the woman. "The lay brothers wear simple brown habits."

"Like the Brothers of Saint Mathew?" he asked.

"You learn fast," said Natalia.

"I think we need to visit Brother Ambrose when we are done here," he said.
