"Very well," said Cyric, "then leave this place." He tossed the sword to the floor.

Brother Septimus rose to his feet, his knee in obvious agony as he shuffled forward, then bent to retrieve his sword, keeping his eyes on Cyric the entire time. Scabbarding his blade, he moved past the Temple Knight to exit the mission. "I won't forget this," Septimus swore.

"Good," said Cyric, "neither will I. I look forward to our next encounter."

Brother Septimus limped back into the street, his knights following. Cyric knew they'd be watching the mission, but he hoped he had bought enough time for Athgar and Natalia to escape.

Athgar peered around the corner of the building. In the distance, he could see the Travellers Rest, its interior lit by candles, noise drifting out of the open door.

"Do you see any knights?" whispered Natalia.

"No," he replied, "at least not outside. How do you want to do this?"

"I think it best if we just walk in like regular patrons," she responded.

"We could go around back," he suggested.

"That would be more suspicious," Natalia said. "I think a more direct approach is in order." She stepped out into the street, holding her hand out for him. "Come along," she said, "and relax. We're just two people out for a drink, remember?"

He did as she suggested, then stepped from the shadows. It was an uncomfortable feeling, being out in the open while so many were looking for them, but he was determined to show courage. He took her hand, and together, they moved towards the inn.

Athgar's eyes were scanning the road, on the lookout for danger, but Natalia concentrated on the open door before them. They entered the inn to see a dozen or so patrons, most sitting at tables, chatting amiably, but two were gathered around a board that was attached to the wall, one of them pulling knives from it as they talked.

Natalia and Athgar walked over to the nearest open table and sat down quietly. Moments later, they were approached by a serving girl. "Can I get you something? she asked.

"We're friends of Brother Caerwell," said Natalia, "do you know him?"

"I do," she said, leaning in a little closer. "I take it you'll need lodging?"

"We do," replied Natalia.

"Then follow me," said the girl.

Athgar bowed deeply, "And the blessings of the Gods be upon you."

"No," corrected Cyric, "not the Gods, the Saints. You're supposed to be a member of the Brothers of Saint Mathew, remember?"

"I'll never get this straight," he replied.

"You can do this," said Natalia, smiling. "If I can do it, so can you."

"It's nice of you to say," said Athgar, "but it's not so easy, breaking my old habits."

Natalia stood, walking over to him and embraced him. "You need a rest, that's all, you've been going at this all day long."
