- About the Author
The mirror caught her attention, and she moved before it, intent on checking how she looked. Natalia's dress was of the finest materials, but she couldn't help noticing its somewhat bedraggled appearance. It might pass for well-to-do here, but back in Karslev, it would be seen as scandalous to appear like this. Not having had a chance to purchase a change of clothes, she decided that perhaps that was the best place to start. Rather than bring a dressmaker to her, she resolved to save a bit and go in search of one.
Natalia's first trip out of the Green Leaves was pleasant enough, for the inn lay within a district known for its cobblers and dressmakers. No more than half a block away she found a suitable shop, and she spent some time with the proprietor, deciding on what to order. Having rarely set foot outside the Volstrum, her knowledge of clothing was limited. Only the finest of clothes were good enough for the Stormwinds, a habit, she soon realized, that could be excessively expensive.
She decided that a mage seeking employment would need well-made garments, the better to portray success and power, but her day to day activities would preclude the more ornate outfits common to mages of the court. At the dressmaker's suggestion, she ordered a few for everyday use and three more elaborate pieces that would present the image of a prosperous individual. With promises they would be completed later in the week, Natalia set off looking for more appropriate footwear.
She stopped in front of a cobbler's, trying to peer in as someone worked inside. The glare from the late morning sun reflected off the window, and she had to stand on her tiptoes to see through, her hand shading her eyes. An old man sat inside, sewing leather, while two more, slightly younger men, sat at a work table, cutting leather or cloth.
Natalia, moving towards the door intent on entering, caught a reflection in the window. Swearing she had seen a man looking at her, she turned to view her observer who was leaning against the building across the street. He tipped his hat to her, making a kissing motion with his lips. Her face turned crimson at the attention, and she quickly entered the shop, eager to be away from him.
She wondered, briefly, if the man had been following her? She was suddenly struck with fear! Had the family found her, even here, hundreds of miles from Karslev? Pausing in the doorway, Natalia looked over her shoulder again, but the unwelcome man had moved on. Perhaps she was overthinking things, she thought to herself. It was probably just a young man taking notice of her. She was, after all, wearing an elegant dress.
