- About the Author
Athgar stood with axe and shield, while Gorlag held two axes and wore his chainmail armour, complete with helmet.
Uhdrig raised both hands in the air and waited for the witnesses to quiet.
"Life," she began, "that which we hold most sacred has been threatened and accusations made. It is the word of one against that of another, and so, in accordance with our ancient laws, a challenge has been issued to decide the truth of it. In the tradition of our ancestors, combat will be until one submits, or is driven from the ring, or till one breathes no more. Do you both understand these conditions?"
She looked to Athgar and then to Gorlag, and they both nodded their agreement. "Very well," she said, "then our ancestors will determine your fate. Return to the edge of the ring, and the fight will commence."
Athgar turned, making his way to the perimeter.
"Good luck, my friend," said Kargen, "and may your ancestors watch over you."
"Be wary of Gorlag," warned Shaluhk, "for he is like a snake preparing to strike."
Athgar nodded, then turned to face the centre. Gorlag had already started running across the battleground, his axes swinging from either side, forming a whirlwind of steel. Athgar knew he would have scant time to cast a spell, so he advanced to meet the Orc, his shield held upright.
Gorlag's axes dug into the wood, sending splinters flying from its rim. Surprised by the ferocity of the attack, Athgar staggered back, almost touching the edge of the circle, then ducked and rolled, coming up behind the great Orc, whose momentum had almost carried him too far.
The chieftain turned quickly, taking the Therengian by surprise. Athgar put up his shield just in time, feeling the press of the Orc's axes numbing his arm. A chunk of wood flew from his shield, removing a section the size of his fist. Athgar backed up, trying to remember a spell, but the attack was too ferocious, and he had little time to think.
After a whirlwind of slashes, Gorlag backed up, his face growing more confident. "I shall enjoy this," he boasted.
Athgar dug deep, bringing a spell to his mind. He pointed his weapon hand at the chieftain, sending a streak of fire towards the Orc.
Gorlag dodged, and the shot sailed past him, narrowly missing a group of spectators. The crowd backed up, suddenly aware of the close confines, and wishing more room betwixt them and this fight.
