  40. About the Author

Athgar kept charging, reaching for his axe and getting it out just in time to parry the Temple Knight's onslaught, for as Athgar had advanced, Morvus had pulled his sword and stood, waiting. Sparks flew as sword met axe, their weapons locking for an instant, the combatants close enough for Athgar to smell the breath of his enemy. Commander Morvus pressed the attack, using his strength to bear down, but Athgar retaliated by kicking the commander in the shin. Unhurt, but unbalanced by the act, the knight drew back, giving the Therengian some breathing space.

Morvus advanced once more, swinging with his sword, but this time it was not Athgar that he attacked, instead it was his weapon. The axe sailed out of Athgar's hands, leaving him defenceless. There was little the Therengian could do now but dodge, hoping to gain some room to cast.

Natalia shot ice at the fire snake, but as she released the spell, the creature spat, burning her arm and spoiling her aim, the ice hitting the ground and scattering in all directions. She took a quick look around to get her bearings. The area to the west was clear, and she started moving in that direction, intent on finding better cover, but Nezerov threw up a curtain of flame, cutting off her retreat. She was now caught between a wall of flame and the spitting fire creature, with the green-robed mage advancing, his face a mask of rage.

With nothing to lose, Natalia conjured a mist, quickly filling the courtyard and blocking her sight of all but the immediate area.

As soon as Athgar had started running towards the commander, Cyric emerged from the armoury. All around him were shouts of alarm, and the Mathewite ran as fast as he could in the direction of the fight. Before he could help, however, a wall of fire sprang up before him, effectively sealing the combatants within. As a consequence, he was forced to watch, helplessly, as the battle unfolded before him.

Athgar rolled to the side, narrowly escaping the downward slash of the knight commander, but leaving himself prone. Seeing the opportunity, Morvus gave a shout of triumph as he raised his sword overhead, but it was not to be, for just as he started his final attack, a thick mist enveloped them both. The blade swung to Athgar's side, narrowly missing, and then he leaped to his feet, attempting to grapple with his sworn enemy.

Athgar's hands locked onto the commander's forearms, bearing down with all the strength he could muster. There was a titanic struggle as they fought, man versus man, in a test of might, but years of training had given the Temple Knight an advantage, and soon he was, once more, forcing the Therengian to the ground.
