  40. About the Author

He walked through the archway into the Inner Keep. The area here was smaller than that of where the stables lay but formed the highest point of the fortress. To his right was the chapel, sitting beside the barracks of the Sisters of Saint Agnes, while to his left sat the living quarters for all the ecclesiastic's that worked here.

The chancellery itself was the grandest structure in the fortress, a full three stories in height, much like the barracks, but the ceilings were much higher, making it almost fifty percent taller. This building housed the upper echelons of the Church for the entire bailiwick, and no expense had been spared during its construction. It had massive columns built in a long-ago style, while the roof was covered in copper, the better to protect those below from the ravages of the sea.

Cyric knew all six orders were housed here, and he wondered who would have the honour of guarding this edifice. His question was answered as soon as he entered to see the distinctive blue and white tabards of the Temple Knights of Saint Ansgar standing to either side of the door.

It opened into a large foyer, with a ceiling that reached to the rooftop. Looking up, Cyric saw the mural that decorated the ceiling. He had heard of it, of course, but to see Raphael Durga's masterpiece in person was an experience. Depicting the Saints, all six of them, gathered around the table in Herani, it was called The Pact, an event of significance as they combined their followers into a centralized organization, the precursor to the Church of the Saints.

A cough drew Cyric's attention, and he looked to see a man wearing the white and black livery of Saint Augustine standing in front of him. "Can I help you?" the knight asked.

"Yes, sorry," said Cyric, "I was overcome by the fresco."

The man smiled, "Don't worry, it happens a lot. I've been here for two years, and I still find myself staring at it from time to time."

"The detail is amazing. It must have taken him years to complete."

"Indeed," said his host, "twelve to be exact, but I doubt you came here just to see the painting."

"No," said Cyric, "I've come to see Archprior Legault."

"Of course," the man replied. "I should have realized by your tabard. We seldom see visitors from Saint Mathew, and when we do, it's almost always to see the Archprior. If you'll follow me, I'll show you the way."

Cyric fell into step behind his host. Two massive staircases were visible here, reaching up all the way to the third floor. Taking the one on the right, their feet made almost no noise on the luxurious carpet as they ascended.
