  40. About the Author

"I'll need to locate you if I find anything," said Cyric. "In the meantime, give my respects to Natalia. I look forward to seeing you both again sometime soon."

"I will," promised the Therengian.

Cyric made his way to the side of the ship. Athgar watched as the Temple Knight clambered down into the skiff. Moments later, the crew put their backs to the oars, and the little vessel started rowing towards the docks.

Natalia gave the hem one final tug. "That should do, I think."

Lady Arabel looked down, twirling slightly to send the dress spinning. "Excellent," she said, "you've done a marvellous job. It's so nice to get out of that dress I was wearing."

"Shall we go up on deck?" asked Natalia.

"Of course," the lady responded, "no doubt you're eager to see that young man of yours."

Natalia blushed, "Yes, Lady Calderra."

"Well, then," the lady continued, "let us delay no longer."

She made her way to the steps. They were in the aft section of the Swift, much further back than Natalia and Athgar's room. The steps here, were far more gradual, and therefore, easier to climb.

Lady Arabel stepped out onto the deck, pausing a moment to let the warmth of the sun heat her face. Natalia exited shortly thereafter, a smile coming to her lips as she spied Athgar.

"How long have you been up here?" she asked.

"Long enough to say goodbye to Cyric," replied the Therengian. "He sends his regards, but had to report to his superior."

"I'm sorry I missed him," mused Natalia.

"How long ago did he leave?" asked Lady Arabel.

"Some time ago. He's already made the dock, and the skiff is returning."

"Lady Calderra," called out the captain. They all turned at his approach.

"May I say," continued Captain Runell, "that it's been an absolute pleasure having you aboard."

"Thank you, Captain," she replied, "you've been most gracious. I shall remember your kindness."

The captain bowed his head in acknowledgement. "And you two," he said, shifting his gaze to Natalia and Athgar, "we wouldn't have made it if not for your efforts." He handed a small bag to Natalia. "Your fee," he said, "you earned every bit of it. I even added some extra coin, for the Fire Mage."

"You didn't need to do that," objected Athgar.

Captain Runell raised his hand to silence the objection. "No, no, I must insist. I've never seen such bravery before, and I've sailed waters you can only dream about. Good luck to you both, I hope you find what you're looking for."

"Thank you, Captain," said Athgar, extending his hand.

Runell shook it with a firm grip. Natalia moved closer, giving the man a hug. The old sailor blushed but returned it.

"You'll have to excuse me now," he said in a gruff voice, "I've work to do."
