- About the Author
"Let's just say I'm not in a hurry to repeat the experience," said Athgar.
Cyric laughed, "I can't say I disagree with you. Now," he turned back to Natalia, "I'll let you get some rest, though I rather suspect it will be hard to get this Therengian to leave your side."
Natalia smiled, even though she was weak, "Nor would I want him to. He's my Therengian, and I prefer him close." She squeezed his hand again for reassurance.
Cyric rose, banging his head on the deck overhead. "Saint's sake!" he called out.
Athgar burst out laughing as the knight turned to look at him in disbelief. "I'm sorry, Brother Cyric," the Therengian said, "but the look on your face was priceless."
Cyric rubbed the top of his head. "I must remember to wear my helmet when below decks," he said, "these damned ships are far too cramped for me. Are all the crewmen short?"
Natalia laughed, Athgar's mirth infectious. "Sorry, Brother Cyric," she said at last, "we mean no disrespect."
"None taken," the Temple Knight replied. "Now, after all we've been through, I think you can just call me Cyric. How does that sound?"
"Agreed," said Athgar, extending his hand. "Thank you, Cyric."
"You're quite welcome, my pyromantic friend."
"Where did you learn your healing?" asked Athgar. "You seem to know your business."
"It's part of my training. All the Brothers of Saint Mathew are competent in the healing arts. It would be handy if we could use magic, but alas, there is little of it to go around."
"Do you know Brother Ambrose?" asked Athgar. "I only ask because he helped me after I was injured in Draybourne."
"The name is not familiar, but we are a large order," said Cyric. "Though, if I ever do run across him, I'll be sure to give him your regards. Now, I think it's time I went up on deck, I certainly don't want to hit my head again. You two come and see me when Natalia here, is feeling better. I've been thinking about this search of yours, and I may have some ideas.
Natalia sat up, suddenly regretting her impulse. Her head ached as if someone was hitting her with a club, and she quickly lay back down.
Athgar smiled, even as Natalia grimaced. "Yes," he said, "we'll come and see you once our Water Mage has followed your advice and rested."
Cyric turned to leave but was halted by Natalia's next words.
"Wait," she called out, "what happened to the woman that Athgar pulled from the sea?"
"She's resting," replied Cyric, "only a little the worse for wear. She was exhausted, much like Athgar here. I suspect she'll sleep the night away, though I'm sure she'll want to thank the two of you come morning."
"Who is she?" Natalia asked.
