She was clean. Clean enough to do what she had to do next, anyway. To find a dorm monitor and tell them someone outside needed help.
If she did that.
They could just leave her there. Wait and see. It might be better for them if—
No.
“She’s unconscious and bleeding, but she has a pulse,” Lily said.
“She does?” Maria looked up at Lily, still clinging to her leg. It hurt. “You checked?”
“I checked.”
“Oh, thank God.” There were tears in Maria’s eyes. “I was so scared, so scared, so—”
“I know. I heard you scream.” Lily paused. “You shouldn’t have done that.”
Maria sat back on her heels. Her eyes crinkled around her tears. “I didn’t scream.”
“You did. I heard you.”
Maria shook her head. “I didn’t. I knew if I screamed, they’d all come running. I put my hand over my mouth so I couldn’t.”
Come to think of it, why hadn’t anyone else come running outside? Or gone up to the fourth floor to see what had happened?
The building was as silent as ever. There were no sounds of feet on the stairs. No dorm monitors shining flashlights into dark corners.
Had Lily just imagined the sound of screaming? Like she’d imagined the footstep outside?
Never mind. They didn’t have time to worry about things like that.
“Go back to our room.” Lily wiped her hands again. “Get in bed. I’ll go tell a dorm monitor.”
“Tell them what?”
“That I saw something fall out the window. If they get her to the hospital fast she might still live.”
Maria stood up. “Might?”
Lily shook her head.
Maria pressed her face into her hands. “There was something wrong with that stuff. It wasn’t oxy.”
“It was Ecstasy.” Lily turned off the faucet.
“It was—what?”
Lily sighed. “It turned out Austin didn’t have any oxy on him, but he had a few capsules of liquid X he got from some guy in town, so I said I’d take that instead.”
Lily didn’t meet Maria’s eyes. Even though it wasn’t completely a lie.
Oxy would’ve been too big of a risk. They only had one chance, and they needed something they could be sure would show up on the drug screen.
Lily had needed to drop a lot of vague hints to get Austin to tell her exactly what he had on hand, which, as it turned out, was mostly weed and prescription stuff. Once he showed her those two little capsules, though, Lily knew it was their only choice. X would show up on a test for sure, and it would be easy for Maria to put it in Delilah’s drink when she wasn’t looking.
And obviously, putting it in her drink was the only way. Delilah would never take something this close to the championship game unless they made her.
