Lily flattened herself against the wall, pain stabbing into her leg. The girl in front, Katie, ran right past her.

“Ross!” Katie shouted, her footsteps pounding on the stairs. “Somebody! We need help!”

The second girl started to follow Katie up the steps. She brushed her hair out of her eyes. That was when Lily recognized Felicia.

“What’s going on?” Lily’s voice came out desperate.

Before Felicia could answer, footsteps thundered down the stairs. Katie and Ross rushed past Lily carrying a first-aid kit, then shoved their way through the crowd gathered around the bathroom door. An abbreviated wail sounded from inside the room before Ross slammed the door, pushing the rest of the group out into the hall. Now that Lily was closer, the screams didn’t sound at all like Maria’s.

“After your princess roommate pulled her little stunt at the dance . . .” Felicia angled her head toward the cemetery and lowered her voice. “Everybody went berserk. Apparently a bunch of girls from my English class just tried to hold a séance in the bathroom. They read that the best way to summon ghosts was to prick your finger. By the time I came in to stop them they already had a knife out. Next thing I know, there’s blood spraying out everywhere.”

Lily’s stomach lurched. She couldn’t stop herself from picturing it. All that blood, arcing across the bathroom.

The other freshmen had noticed Lily and Felicia talking. A few edged toward them. Probably eavesdropping. The last thing Lily needed was more rumors spreading.

But the looks on their faces were clear enough. They could tell there was something wrong with her.

Lily shrank back against the wall. After what happened at the dance, had the whole school figured out that she was with Maria?

The bathroom door burst open. Three freshmen reeled back as Ross and Katie ran forward, pulling another girl between them. Her face was ashen, her lips formed into a silent cry. A piece of gauze was taped to the girl’s forearm, but bright red liquid had already seeped through the bandage. It spilled out onto the floor behind them as Ross and Katie pulled her toward the health center.

Lily’s stomach dropped again. As soon as Katie and Ross were gone she bent forward, her hands on her knees, and retched. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d eaten, so there was nothing to come up, but Felicia and the other freshmen looked at her warily, with whispers and giggles.

She had to get back to her room. Lily pulled herself upright, avoiding the others’ gazes, and began the long, slow walk. She tried not to put any weight on her left leg, but she winced every time she leaned too hard on her right.

A group of juniors ran past her talking about the Kingsley Prize. For a second she thought about calling after them and asking for help, but—
