Austin pointed at the statue of the woman with the roses. “You came up here to hang with her, then, right? She’s totally your type.”
Lily flinched. She glanced over to see if Felicia was laughing, but Felicia’s face was completely still.
Austin was probably just making another of his stupid jokes. But what if he’d seen her and Maria up on the stage and figured it out? What if everyone had? Tomorrow, at breakfast, was everyone going to look at her and know?
“So, Lily Boiten,” Austin said, distracting her before she could work herself into a full panic. “You remember that night you came and bought those two pills from me?”
Lily froze.
She’d counted on Austin, in his perpetually stoned haze, to forget about that. She’d counted on him not to be a risk.
“What about it?” Lily glanced behind her, calculating how fast she could get down the hill. It would be hard with her legs still hurting this way.
“You were acting really funny that night.” Austin lifted his feet into the air and thumped them back down onto the tombstone. Lily shifted, remembering the lectures she’d heard as a kid when she visited her grandparents’ graves about being respectful of the dead.
“I still can’t figure out why you wanted that stuff,” Austin went on. “I haven’t even seen you drink a beer since, like, sophomore year.”
Lily shrugged, trying to act like this was no big deal. “I wanted to unwind.”
“You? Unwind? Yeah, okay.” Austin laughed. “Anyway, it’s weird how they said Delilah did acid that same night. Where would she’ve gotten it? I know I didn’t have any. I didn’t even remember I had those two pills I gave you. Not until you asked and I saw them stuck in the bottom of my bag.”
“Yeah, weird.” Lily tried to stand up, but her legs hurt too much.
“Anyway, welcome to our spot, Lily Boiten.” Austin leaned in close. “Fee and me, we like to come up here sometimes. Get a break from all the crazy down the hill. Nice to go someplace quiet, where you can hear yourself think.”
“It was quiet until you got here.” Felicia looked pointedly at Austin.
“Yeah, well, things went cuckoo in that ballroom. Had to get away from that shit before I lost it. You too?” Austin directed the question to Lily.
A trickle of sweat formed behind her right ear. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh.” Austin dropped his feet to the ground. He looked disappointed. “Never mind. You seemed so freaked, I thought maybe you saw it too.”
He didn’t sound like he was talking about her and Maria, but Lily had to be sure. “Saw what?”
He shrugged. Then he glanced at Felicia.
“Tell her if you want.” Felicia shrugged. “I don’t see the point in hiding it.”
