Chapters (14)
Now I begin to think that everything has worked out for the best. If I had not been cut off from Jordan when I was, I would not have had the time to generate my Jordan-algorithm prior to her death. When I was no longer permitted to visit or to interview her, I believed direct contact with her was broken off, but now I see that direct contact between us only began when I produced my first viable, algorithmically-generated Jordan-responses. What there was to contact in person was only the vector simulator; the true Jordan was the impersonal language function, which I have regenerated. In effect, I have cultivated a “cutting,” in the botanical sense, from Jordan, which remains viable even after she is personally no longer alive in her body. There is, in principle, no end to the potential of this algorithm to produce further Jordan responses. Her death cannot stop our analysis. With this algorithm, which I am perfecting all the time, I can prevent the disappearance of the real Jordan. She will continue to think and respond on the pages of my transcripts, which will no longer be recordings of conversations but the conversations themselves – and I will be able to confirm everything she says using the body of her past utterances, right down to the style of expression.
Jordan’s treatment will continue, in the new discipline of transmortal therapy.
I have been dismissed from the hospital. Dr. Carroll refuses to look at my evidence and seems positively offended by my work. I wish I could say this was a surprise, but given her own limited language function, it was obvious that she would not be able to comprehend me. It was perhaps naive of me to hope that, in the absence of this comprehension, she would still have sufficient confidence in me, given my extensive history of successful therapeutic activity, to allow me to proceed. In any case, at this juncture, further work at the hospital would be pointless – I can conduct a full analysis of any patient, anywhere in the world, at any time, provided I have sufficient material to generate their language function algorithmically.
