Sinead angled the page she was holding up a little, as if fashioning it into a shield. “Yes,” she said, accompanying the response with a very deliberate look. “Presumably she didn’t have professional considerations to take into account.”
“Wait,” Logan interjected. “You’re no’ taking his surname?”
Sinead shifted her weight from foot to foot. “Is now really the time to talk about that?” she wondered aloud.
“Thank Christ,” Logan said, sighing with relief. “Two DC Neishes in the same office and working the same cases was going to be a bloody nightmare.”
“Aye, that’s a relief, right enough,” Ben said. “I was getting a headache just thinking about it.”
Tyler tutted and sat back in his chair. Sinead’s expression softened, but he wasn’t looking, so failed to catch it.
“Anyway,” she said, going back to her paperwork. “We still don’t have any idea whose baby they had with them, or where it came from. They travelled across from Skye, though, and we’re not sure what they were doing there yet. We’re waiting on bank statements to try to trace their movements before they got on the ferry. Should get them through during the night, or early tomorrow morning. In the meantime, Uniform is phoning around guest houses and hotels to see if we can find out where they stayed.”
“Checked the taxi companies?” Ben asked. “On Skye, I mean. They had a lot of luggage and no car. They didn’t walk it down to the ferry.”
Sinead clicked the button on a pen and scribbled a note. “I’ll get Uniform to check,” she said, then she glanced at her watch. “I’ve got an interview shortly with the ticket collector who was on duty the day the Sutherlands travelled down from Mallaig. He’s coming in on the late train from Glasgow. Gets in around half ten. I’m hoping he can confirm they had the baby with them the whole way.”
“There were only four tickets,” Logan recalled. “At the house. There were four train tickets.”
“Kids that age travel free,” Hamza said. “They don’t need a ticket.”
“You sure?” Logan asked.
“Unless they’ve changed the rules in the last year or two, aye,” Hamza confirmed. “I think they have to be, like, four or something before they need to get a ticket.”
“Check that, will you?” Logan said, and Sinead added it to her list.
With that done, the DC continued her rundown of the family. Archie had two previous wives, one living, one dead. The dead one, Julie, had been his first, and had died in a car accident while driving to meet him after a pub gig back when he was just starting out.
