Tyler stared at the fruit that Logan had deposited on the table by his bed, then laughed so loudly he earned a shh from a passing nurse.

“One plum, boss? Helluva generous of you.”

“Aye, I thought so,” Logan agreed, taking a seat by the bed. “It actually came in a pack of four, but for the purposes of the joke I had to eat the other three.”

“Respect, boss. That’s dedication to the gag.”

“Tell me about it. I don’t even like plums,” the DCI said. “But, we all have to suffer for our art, I suppose.” He looked the man in the bed up and down. “How you feeling?”

Tyler blinked slowly. “Eh… not sure. I know they took one out, but it all feels weirdly heavy. I’m starting to worry the surgeon might’ve left his watch in, or something.”

“Fingers crossed. The money they’re on, it might be a Rolex.”

“Aye, but it’ll be a right pain in the arse to wind it up,” Tyler replied.

“Maybe literally, depending on what way it’s facing,” Logan said. “But misplaced timepieces aside… You’re fine, though?”

Tyler nodded. “Aye. I mean… as well as can be expected, boss. And you were right, of course. Had to be done. And whatever else happens—whatever comes out of it—we’ll deal with it, you know? Me and Sinead. We’ll get through it.”

Logan patted him on the arm. “I have no doubt about it,” he said. “And well done nabbing Pete Hill. I haven’t had a chance to talk to you since then.”

“Cheers, boss!” Tyler replied. “To be honest, he basically tripped and whanged his face off a tree, so I didn’t have to do that much in the end.”

Logan chuckled. “Still. Good collar.”

Tyler sat a little higher in the bed at that. “What made you realise it was him?” he asked.

Logan’s mouth drew into a thin smile. “A wise man once told me that these things don’t always have to be complicated,” he said.

“That guy sound like a genius, if you ask me, boss.”

“I was overthinking it. I got distracted by being back in Glasgow, but I should’ve seen it right away,” Logan admitted, completely ignoring the DC’s remark and the grin on his face. “He was the only one with the means, motive, and opportunity. Hamza mentioned that Pete had loaded all the bags into the car, so he would’ve seen the bag of money. He also knew they were staying out in the middle of nowhere, with no car and a patchy phone signal. And he’s ex-military. Army medic, it transpires. We looked into him. Bit of a chequered history when he was serving. Not exactly a model soldier.”

“And… what? That was it?” Tyler asked. “You didn’t have any other evidence on him?”
