“Not reporting it tells me one of two things, Frankie. Either you weren’t bothered about losing that amount of money, or you decided to take the law into your own hands and get it back yourself,” Logan continued. “Now, I’ll admit that I don’t know you very well, but I’m starting to get a good idea of you, Frankie, and I can’t see it being the first one. I don’t think you’re going to just let a big bag of your money go waltzing out the door without doing something about it.”

A seagull cawed as it flew up the side of the building and arced past Frankie’s face, wings spread wide. Logan wished he could take credit for the convulsion of terror that spasmed through the bastard’s whole body, but he’d settle for enjoying the sight of it.

“Now, I know Archie took your money. You knew Archie took your money. And now, Archie and his family are all dead, and the money’s nowhere to be found,” Logan said. “That rings a few alarm bells for me, Frankie. That points a finger or two.”

“You can’t do this!” Frankie hissed, an acorn of anger growing deep in that quivering jelly of his fear. “You can’t fucking do this to me!”

“I’m not doing anything, Frankie. I’m just passing the time until backup arrives, so we can start negotiating with the unnamed gentleman currently holding you hostage. Might as well have a chat while we wait, eh? Makes the time pass more quickly.”

“Fuck you!” Frankie cried, and spasms danced across his face.

“You killed them, didn’t you?” Logan pressed. “Archie and his family. You murdered them, not just to get your money back, but to send a message. To show what happens to anyone who steals from Frankie Cowan.”

“No! No, I didn’t!” Frankie protested, desperation flooding back in. “I was fuckin’ raging about the money, aye, but I didn’t know where he was. I didn’t know where to find him.”

“Well-connected man like you, Francis? I find that hard to believe,” Logan said.

“I fuckin’ mean it! I swear tae fuck! I had no idea where he’d fucked off to. We were looking for him—and aye, you want the truth? I’d have murdered the prick if I’d found him—but I didn’t. I couldn’t. He was totally off the fuckin’ radar, man! He’d vanished intae thin air. I didn’t lay a finger on him!”

“Unlike Jazmin McAllister, then?” Logan said, and there was a moment of stillness from the man being dangled over the ledge.

“What? What you on about?” Frankie asked.

“She was one of your… what would you call them? Starlets?” Logan said. “Pretty wee thing. Short hair. Skinny. Bit boyish, maybe. I’m sure you know the one.”
