There was a snore from over by the door. Unlike Sinead, whose forty-winks had been unplanned, Dave had fashioned himself a pillow from a rolled-up jacket, and was fast asleep with his head on the desk.
“He’s been like that for the last half-hour,” Ben remarked.
Sinead yawned again, the sight of the sleeping Exhibits Officer reminding her how tired she was. “How long was I out for?”
“About the same,” Ben said. “I thought the phone ringing might wake you, but you didn’t rouse.”
“I should check in with Tyler,” Sinead muttered. She picked up her phone and glanced at the screen, but found no missed calls or messages.
“He’s probably asleep. Jack said he dropped him back at the hotel before bringing Billy Neeps in for questioning.”
“Oh. Right.”
She checked the phone again, in case she’d missed anything. Tyler was hopeless at being on his own. He got bored of it quickly, and if he’d been in the hotel all night on his own she’d have expected half a dozen texts and missed calls at least.
But there was nothing.
“Billy owned up, by the way,” Ben said, and Sinead’s body went rigid with shock. “Sorry, not to the murders. To taking the baby. Him and his wife picked her up earlier in the week, he says. It was all arranged through Archie. An off-the-books adoption. He insists Jazmin didn’t want the baby, and that they thought they were doing her a favour. He also insists the family was alive and well when he left.”
“Anything to back his story up?” Sinead asked.
“A few bits and bobs. Got his car on a couple of ANPR cameras headed up the road on Wednesday. We’ve got him as far as Tyndrum. His phone history. What’s it called? With the satnav?”
“GPS?”
“That, aye. That shows the whole journey, but obviously doesn’t tell us what he did while he was at the house. It fits his story, though.”
Sinead nodded. “Jazmin’s parents. Did they say anything about Archie and his family coming to stay?”
“Hamza didn’t want to push too far on it. Don’t want them speculating until we know for sure that the baby was Jazmin’s, but they confirmed the Sutherlands did stay for a few days. They were very… how did he put it? Generous with the wee one. They encouraged Jazmin’s parents to hold her a lot while they were there.”
Sinead wrinkled her nose. “Bit weird. Rubbing their face in it without them knowing, maybe?”
“I don’t think so,” Ben said. “I actually think—I hope—maybe they thought they were doing a good thing. Letting the wee one meet her grandparents, and vice versa. I think maybe it was a kindness.”
“Or fulfilling a promise to Jazmin, maybe,” Sinead suggested.
