“Sure I can’t tempt you with that drink?” Heather asked.
“Lovely offer, Heather, but I think we both know that would be a bad idea.”
She nodded, although she didn’t seem entirely in agreement. But desperation wasn’t her style. “I guess we just missed our chance. Eh, Jack?”
“Aye. I guess we did,” Logan agreed.
“Our own fault, I suppose. It’s what we get for wasting all those years dancing around each other,” Heather said. She picked up Logan’s coat and handed it over. “Nice working with you again, Detective Chief Inspector.”
Logan took the coat and wrestled himself into it. “Same to you, Detective Chief Inspector.”
“Come on, then,” Heather said. She fixed his collar for him, then ran a hand down his back and let it linger at the base of his spine. “At least let me escort you off the premises.”
* * *
They had just passed the Gozer’s office when the Detective Superintendent stepped out into the corridor and called after them.
“God, this brings back memories,” he said, once they’d doubled back to meet him. “You two. Working your magic in there.”
“You were watching?” Logan asked.
“Bits. Couldn’t stay for long, but I needed a dose of nostalgia, and that hit the spot.” He addressed the next part to Logan, and the way Heather’s body language changed suggested she’d taken this as a slight. “You think he’s your man, then?” the Gozer asked. “You think he killed them?”
“He doesn’t,” Heather said, jumping in with the reply.
She put her hands on her hips, making herself appear larger, like she was trying to assert her dominance. This was her patch now, after all. Logan was merely passing through.
“You don’t?” the Gozer asked, and Heather chewed at the inside of her bottom lip.
“No. Like DCI Filson said, I don’t think Billy’s the killer.”
“It appears he’s got your missing baby, though. I was there for that part.”
“Aye. But I think he was telling the truth,” Logan replied. “I think the two of them made some sort of deal. The wean was some sort of peace offering.”
“You think Archie forced the mother to give the kiddie up? Took it from her?” asked the Detective Superintendent.
Logan had to admit that he didn’t know. Not for sure.
“Shuggie Cowan said that Archie was good to the women in his films. Looked after them. If that’s true, then it’s possible she wanted rid, and he tried to help her. I’m going to have someone talk to some of the other women on the list Cowan gave me, get their thoughts on it. Not a lot to be done on it now, though, either way. No one left to testify or to press charges against.”
“There’s still Billy and his wife,” Heather pointed out. “They’re complicit.”
