“Aye, that makes sense, I suppose,” the DI agreed. “You wouldn’t want your real name plastered everywhere if you were getting…” He made some vague hand movements, grasping for an appropriate ending to the sentence.

“Plastered everywhere?” Dave put forward as a possible conclusion, which made Ben’s face screw up in displeasure.

“Aye. Well. Whatever it is that goes on in these things. I wouldn’t know,” he said. “I’m assuming you’d want to keep your real name out of it.” He turned to Sinead. “Did we hear back from the Health Visitors yet?”

Sinead checked her notes. “Yeah, someone called… Marion called back. They haven’t been around to Jazmin’s yet. She was on their worksheet for last week, but she fobbed them off. Said she was going to be taking the baby to see her parents.” Sinead glanced around at the others to check they were listening, then turned back to Ben. “Ask me where, sir.”

“Where?” Ben obliged.

“Skye. Portree.”

Ben, who had been sitting propped on the edge of his desk, stood up. “You’re not saying…?”

“They run a guest house,” Sinead continued.

“Wait, wait,” Hamza interjected. “Jazmin’s parents own a guest house in Portree? The same place Archie and his family were staying?” He looked from Sinead to Ben and back again. “Well, do we know if Archie stayed with them?”

“Not yet,” Sinead admitted. “I only just heard before we sat down for this.”

“We need to get onto them, then,” Hamza said. “If Archie and Donna took Jazmin’s baby to stay with its grandparents, then that means… That means…” His brow furrowed in concentration for a few moments, before he drew a complete blank. “I don’t know what that means, but it means something.”

“I say we talk to Jazmin herself before we bring the parents into it,” Ben said. “Get her side of the story.”

“They might all be together,” Sinead pointed out. “Jazmin might be on Skye.”

Ben checked his watch. The evening was getting on, but there was still a chunk left of it. “Right, we’ll get Uniform up in Drumnadrochit to drive past her house and see if the lights are on. If she’s home, Sinead, I want you heading up there tonight. She’s likely to respond better to you than to the rest of us. Hamza, Dave, we need to follow up on—”

“Eh, I can’t tonight, sir.”

Ben’s sentence stumbled to a stop. “Sorry?”

“I, eh, I can’t,” Sinead said. “I need to get Tyler off the train.”

“I’m sure Tyler’s perfectly capable of getting himself off the train,” Ben replied. He thought about this for a moment. “Well, maybe no’ perfectly capable, but I’m sure he’ll figure it out.”
