There was a pause from the other end of the line. “I’m not sure ‘shocked’ is the right word,” Tyler said. “But, anyway, I’m supposed to get in after ten. The boss says we’re to head up the road, but I thought maybe we should hang on until the—”
“We’re heading up the road,” Sinead told him. “We can have the day at home tomorrow, then…” She caught the puzzled look from Hamza who, like Ben and Dave, was currently engaged in conversation with someone on his own phone. That didn’t, apparently, stop him overhearing Sinead’s. “…we can talk about it later.”
“Aye, we’ll figure it out,” Tyler said.
“Right. Good. And… you’re OK?”
“I’m fine,” Tyler assured her. “Feel a bit guilty leaving him down here on his own, though. But, I’m actually phoning with a bit of news.”
Sinead reached for her notepad. “Go on.”
“We got a list of names of the women who appeared in Archie’s porn films.”
Logan’s voice came muffled from somewhere in the background. “The hell’s this ‘we?’ You buggered about playing pool.”
“Naw, it was definitely a collective effort, boss,” Tyler insisted, and Sinead smiled. His voice was lighter. More relaxed. More Tyler.
There was a rustling and a thumping from the other end of the line. “Here, give me the phone,” Logan said. “You sit there and eat your Quavers. Hello?”
“Hello, sir,” Sinead said.
“How you doing?” Logan asked, and Sinead knew that it wasn’t being asked out of politeness. DCI Jack Logan was many things, but ‘polite’ was rarely one of them.
“I’m… OK, sir. Thanks. You?”
“My head’s spinning with this gobshite, but otherwise grand, aye. I’m sending him up on the next train. I’m assuming you’re OK to deal with everything from there?”
“I am.”
“Good. I’ll phone Mitchell, fill her in. You can talk to Ben yourself, explain why you’re heading up the road, or I can do it. Up to you.”
Sinead looked across to where DI Forde sat with his phone to his ear, one finger stabbing away at the numbers on the keypad. “I can tell him.”
“Right. OK. You do that, then. And if there’s anything you two need…”
“I know, sir,” Sinead said. “You don’t need to say it.”
Logan grunted. “Good. I should hope not,” he said, then his tone changed as he became all business. “Right, you ready for this list?”
Sinead clicked the top of her pen, extending the nib. “Ready when you are, sir,” she said, and Logan began to reel off a list of Archie’s ‘starlets.’
He was spelling out the fourth one when Sinead stopped him. “Hang on, hang on,” she said, her pen stopping halfway through the first name. “Jazmin? Not McAllister, is it?”
