Criminal. The corrupt. The immoral or the amoral elements. All criminals are not found behind bars. Killers roam free. Because they are in power they have the licence to kill, torture, abduct. Everything’s changed overnight. Even the funeral rites. If you’re known to be the enemy by ‘the other side’ and you’re killed then you are not allowed burial in a coffin. You are ‘the enemy’, corrupt, a thug, the informer, pro-establishment. Oh, there are a thousand reasons why you can be considered the enemy. No mourners are allowed. No white flags or funeral orations. Everyone must know that your killing was justified. So the body will be carried in a certain way, the way a trussed pig would be, and flung into the grave. For this man, Nilame, it will be different. There’ll be a big funeral. Orations. Eulogies. The pansakula ceremonies. Processions of mourners following the hearse with wreaths and banners. Weeping of a distraught family. Politicians in white garb will visit the house and solemnly bow their heads before the bier. The police will be at the scene of the funeral. The evidence will be recorded and documented minutely but they’ll never find us. We’re the men who do not wear masks but we can melt away and become invisible too.
