  53. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

5. At the same time Odell was plotting the demise of Yvonne and Milton, they were plotting their revenge. Instead of killing him, they decided to destroy him by telling Joyce about his secret family. Did you think it would turn out the way it did?

6. Joyce loved Odell so much, she believed everything he told her. When she found out about his secret family and how he’d been embezzling money from her family to support them, she did a complete turnaround. Do you think if he had not called Joyce a “beast” and accused her of “buying him” as he lay dying, she would have attempted to save his life?

7. Joyce’s parents adored Odell and thought he could do no wrong. Do you think she should have told them that he was an adulterer, a thief, and a con man before they planned such an elaborate funeral for him?

8. Joyce was basically a good person. She had never committed a crime or hurt another human being. Odell’s betrayal was so massive, was Joyce justified in reacting the way she did when she saw him bleeding to death?

9. Do you think Joyce “got away with murder” because she refused to get Odell medical assistance? Even if she had called for help, he still would have died. Therefore, she didn’t think she had done anything wrong. As a matter of fact, Joyce was pleased that she had been able to “punish” him in some way for hurting her, and she didn’t feel the least bit guilty. Do you think Joyce should have felt some remorse? If your answer is yes, why? If it’s no, why?

10. What did you think about Joyce going to Betty Jean’s house to confront her after Odell’s funeral?

11. Joyce decided not to tell anyone about Odell’s secret family and his other crimes because then they would know how gullible she had been. She had convinced herself that this was the only way to save face. Did Joyce make the right decision?

12. Were you surprised when it was revealed that Joyce was pregnant?

13. When Joyce fell in love with another man, she also fell in love with his three children. Now instead of having one child to love and raise, she will have four (and her second is on the way). Do you think that because Joyce had been betrayed so severely, she deserved to be blessed so abundantly?
