I had rejected the offer of another partner; after all, all I had to do was sit in the car and keep watch. A short while later, I saw the silhouetted body of, what I presumed was our target, glancing around the area before disappearing inside. I radioed it in and DCI Bob told me to keep watching.

Not long after that, I heard a scream from inside the mill. My mind raced with possibilities. Aside from the person I’d seen enter, no one else had gone in. I thought that maybe he had a hostage in there, or that perhaps someone just as dangerous had been waiting on him returning.

Either way, with a life in danger, you act.

‘So, I phoned DCI Bob and told him about the scream. He told me to get in there. I asked him if I should wait on back-up and he said no.’

I look at Amy, tears threatening to spill.

‘Is that an order? I asked and he replied ‘Yes.’ So I ran into the building, expecting to see some sort of violent scene, though all I was greeted with was darkness. Then, I heard a shuffling and a man, dressed from head to toe in black, crawled out from under some pipework. He looked murderous.’

I breathe.

‘I assumed in that moment that he had seen the police car and had screamed to try and lure me in. Then he lunged at me with the blade and it becomes a bit of a blur after that.’

Amy has remained composed during my tale, scribbling notes covertly and nodding in all the right places. She sets down her notepad and looks me straight in the eye.

‘Do you blame Bob?’ she asks.

The tears flow in earnest now, and, unable to speak, I simply nod my head. I hadn’t thought of it that way before.

I sink into the sofa and take a sip from my glass. I considered cracking open a bottle of wine, but I need a clear head to make sense of the case, so I’ve opted for an ice-cold lemonade. It feels like we’re closing in.

We know Rory is back in the city, which means that another murder could be about to happen. Obviously, we can’t let that happen, so it is imperative that we keep a close eye on his whereabouts through the network of ANPR cameras. It seems possible that he doesn’t know that is a method of surveillance.

It’s also possible that there is another killer too. It seems that Reuben’s murder was in retaliation to Anna’s, with Rory apparently thinking that Reuben was her killer and doling out what he saw as an appropriate punishment.

It could also be the case that Rory is the only killer, and that his part in the video was an act to detract attention from himself. We know that Jay threw Rory off set, which may or may not have played a part in Reuben and Anna getting together.
