Now that I’m awake and alone, I can’t stop thinking about the video and the fact we now have our killer but no clue where he is or how to find him.
By the time I check my phone again, I realise that I’ve been lying in my bed, awake, for over an hour. What a waste of time I think to myself as I drag my body out of bed and set about locating my long-forgotten, or rather long-ignored, running gear.
Eventually, I find a pile of shorts and t-shirts unceremoniously dumped in the bottom of my wardrobe. I whisper my apologies to them and pull them on; judging them to be a little tighter since I last wore them. I slip on my trainers, which still have a timing chip from a local 10k intertwined between the laces, and head for the door.
Ten minutes later, I’m fighting against my scorching lungs which are protesting at the unheralded burst of physical activity. For a December morning, it’s surprisingly mild. The air is cold as it enters my lungs, trying to sate the burning, though there is a comfort in it.
I refuse to yield to the pain and pick up the pace, the motivational messages from issues of running magazines on a loop in my head. I run down Dan Bank and stop at the traffic lights before turning round and ascending the steep hill, stopping at the top momentarily to catch my breath, before taking off again.
All the while, the case circles my head, every synapse firing, trying to find a little avenue we haven’t yet explored. We now know that Rory Knox murdered Reuben Amaro. This is a fact, we have it on video. And we have a motive; he believes that Reuben murdered his fiancé and this is simply payback.
However, based on the CCTV footage from outside Limas and the hotel, it appears that Reuben did nothing more than try to help Anna in any way he could.
This means that Rory probably took his revenge on the wrong person, and that Anna’s killer is still at large, meaning we are no closer to catching him now, than on the night the body was discovered on the ice.
This means there are two killers on the loose, unless, of course, Rory also killed Anna and only killed the others in an attempt to cover his tracks.
I turn into my street and sprint as fast as I can to my door, bending over with my hands on my knees, gulping in the morning air trying not to be sick all over my driveway.
Once I know that I’m not going to throw up, I remove the key from the zipped pocket on the back of my leggings and let myself into my house, heading up the stairs and straight to the bathroom. It takes a while to clamber out of my tight, sweaty clothes and when I do, I climb into the shower.
