That’s when Rosie turns to me, blinking as she takes me in. And my anger returns, simmering underneath my skin. It’s not Sofia’s fault her ex-boyfriend is clearly the worst, but it is Rosie’s fault for not telling me anything. If she had just explained, I would’ve understood, but letting me worry, letting me stress—
“Do you have a minute, Ro?” I ask. “Can we talk?”
Rosie’s lips thin, and she nods, gesturing for the door.
I open it, looking out into the hallway for any sight of Matt, but he’s gone, so I safely step outside.
Rosie follows me a minute later, crossing her arms. “What is it?”
I give her an incredulous look. “I texted you and called you so many times. Why didn’t you pick up? I was worried out of my mind. You know we had an important scene to film today—”
“How are you thinking about the film right now?” Rosie asks in disbelief. “Sofia is in there crying, and all you can do is complain about—”
“I didn’t say anything about Sofia!” I protest, throwing my arms up. “I’m asking you why you didn’t tell me if you were going to confront Sofia’s boyfriend. We’re supposed to be best friends! I would’ve understood—”
“Oh, really? Would you have?” Rosie asks, rolling her eyes. “All that matters to you these days is this stupid competition! Who gives a fuck, Mina?”
I gape at her. “We both wanted to win this competition. We were in this together. How can you even say something like that? Of course I would’ve fucking understood. I’m not some kind of sociopathic bitch that’s incapable of empathizing with people. But how am I supposed to do that if you won’t even tell me what’s going on?”
“Because I know it wouldn’t have made a difference!” Rosie shouts. “You already think I’m distracted because I spend time with Sofia, though you spend just as much time with Emmitt, and I never say anything! Because I know people can care about more than one thing at once.”
“I spend time with Emmitt because you told me we had to do whatever it took to get him in our film,” I remind her sharply.
“All right, Mina, whatever you say,” Rosie says, shaking her head. “I’m over it. Sofia is going through some shit, and I’m not going to stand out here and fight with you about this.”
Rosie turns on her heel, heading back inside the room without another word.
I stare after her, my lips parted in disbelief. I—I can’t believe Rosie thinks so little of me. I can’t believe she wouldn’t just tell me what was wrong, instead of letting it blow up in our faces like this.
