The girl giggles, shrugging. “It’s true. And your hair looks even better blond. Is it for a movie?”
I put a hand on my hip, raising an eyebrow at Emmitt, though he hasn’t looked at me since the girl’s arrival. Still, I can’t imagine he’s going to tell the truth.
Except then Emmitt laughs quietly. “You could say that. Your hair is also a lovely color. Kind of like starlight.”
Some part of me bristles in disbelief. There’s no way he just used a Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) pickup line on some random fan.
The girl’s expression brightens further. “So, are you here by yourself? I can show you around if you—”
I clear my throat.
Emmitt’s eyes flicker toward me, and he quickly scans my expression. Then a smirk tugs at his mouth, unbelievably condescending.
I scowl at him.
His smirk deepens, until a dimple is pressing into one side of his cheek, and he cocks his head in question.
I open my mouth to tell him to stop being such a dickhead, but then the girl finally notices me.
She looks between us, her brows furrowed. “Are you here with her?”
Emmitt doesn’t look away from me. “I don’t know. Am I?”
“What’s wrong with you?” I ask, shaking my head. “It’s not that hard to say yes or no.”
He shrugs. “What do you want me to say, sweetheart?”
I cross the distance between us, taking his camera from him, unwinding the strap from around his neck. He lets it happen, watching me with sparkling eyes. “If you’re not here with me, I’m sure you won’t be needing this,” I say.
“It’s all yours,” he says, inclining his head. “Take good care of it.”
“Are you guys dating?” the girl asks, frowning.
I blink. Dating? A scoff escapes me. “No. Why would anyone want to date him?”
His grin somehow grows even cockier. “I think anyone would be lucky to date me.”
“As if you have enough brain cells inside that thick head of yours to even make that judgment.”
Emmitt makes a low noise of amusement. “Would you like to come and check? Knock around to see if you can hear anything?”
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
“I like a lot of things.”
“I’m sure you’ll like it when I stick my foot up your ass.”
“If that’s what you’re into, love.”
Before I can retort, the girl stomps her foot, huffing. “Are you seriously ignoring me right now? You are a douchebag!” Suddenly, time seems to still, everything moving in slow motion, and I watch in disbelief as she throws her drink at Emmitt. Holy shit. “I defended you on Twitter so many times, and for what? For you to pretend I don’t even exist?”
