He grinned. “And women do that too, don’t ye think?”
Walking forward, now smiling, Angela hurried toward him and took hold of his arm, then leaned against him, her head resting on his chest. “Let us forget this silly incident, Blackie. I like you as my friend, and…” She paused, lowered her voice and added, “Lover. If your uncle were not outside, I’m afraid I would be tempted to rush you upstairs.”
Looking down at her, his black eyes sparking, he laughed quietly. “I know what ye mean, but I don’t have the courage ter do that, though I’d enjoy it. I’d be afraid ter get caught.”
At this moment, Sarah came into the library and hurried over to them. There was a worried expression on her face.
“Your uncle is asking questions, Blackie. I think you’d better come up with some sort of explanation, about why you’re in here with Angela. Why you’re angry.”
Blackie frowned, and slowly released Angela, shaking his head. “I don’t have an explanation, sure and I don’t.”
Angela murmured, “Just make it a partial truth. You could say we’d asked you to supper but then canceled at the last moment because we’d had to go to Harrogate on Friday on an urgent matter. Unexpectedly, you saw us here. Then, we, or rather I, just explained everything.”
“I think it might work.…” He paused, wondering if it would. Patrick Kennedy was one helluva smart man.
Looking up at him, smiling, her blue eyes fixed on him, Angela said, “Come to Harrogate next Saturday. With Sarah, and bring Finn if you wish.”
“Thank ye,” Blackie murmured, gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and left, bracing himself to face his uncle.

“Sorry to keep ye waiting, Uncle Pat,” Blackie said, joining him on the terrace outside. He grinned. “I’m afraid Sarah and Angela are both chatterboxes. I couldn’t escape for a bit.”
Patrick simply nodded, and gave him a searching look. They had turned to leave when Blackie heard his name being called. As he swung around, Sarah was coming outside, followed by Angela.
Angela rushed forward and stretched out her hand. “Hello, Mr. Kennedy, I’m Sarah’s sister, Angela Welles.”
He took her hand and found himself smiling back at her. “Nice to meet you, Mrs. Welles.”
“Can I offer you something … a glass of lemonade perhaps? It’s such a warm day.”
“Thank you kindly, but we must be off. We’ve been out for a while; I must get us home.”
“Of course, I understand.”
Sarah said, “I hope you can come with me to Harrogate on Saturday, Blackie. Finn said he’d like to join us … for a day out.”
“I’ll try,” Blackie answered, wanting to escape. “Are you going in the morning?” He started to walk forward.
“Yes.” Sarah gave him a big smile, and Angela said, “You’re welcome too, Mr. Kennedy.”
